Santa Fe on a Budget
A historic plaza and half a mile of art galleries that both cost nothing to walk, here’s how to keep the rest of a Santa Fe trip affordable too.
Santa Fe has a genuine reputation for being on the pricier side given its art market and boutique hotels, but several of its best sights, the Plaza, Canyon Road’s atmosphere, cost nothing at all. Here’s how to keep the rest of the costs down without cutting the trip short.
The Plaza and Canyon Road are free
Walking the Santa Fe Plaza and browsing Canyon Road’s galleries costs nothing, only the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and Meow Wolf charge admission. Several of the city’s historic churches are free to step inside too.
Visit outside Indian Market and Fiestas for lower prices
Santa Fe’s hotel prices and crowds spike around Indian Market each August and Fiestas de Santa Fe each September, considerably higher than the rest of the year given the draw of both events. Booking outside these windows offers noticeably lower rates.
Walk the historic downtown over renting a car
Downtown Santa Fe is genuinely compact and walkable, the Plaza, the O’Keeffe Museum and Canyon Road all sit within a comfortable stroll of each other. A car only becomes worthwhile for Meow Wolf or anything outside the historic core.
A green chile stand beats a Plaza tourist restaurant
A breakfast burrito smothered in green chile from a proper local spot is widely a Santa Fe staple, considerably cheaper than a sit-down restaurant right on the Plaza. A New Mexican diner remains one of the better mid-range options too.
Consider staying a few blocks from the Plaza
Hotels right on the Plaza sit at the top of the price range given the location. A room a few blocks into the surrounding neighbourhoods runs noticeably cheaper while staying an easy walk from downtown.
That’s everything I’ve got.
