Brighton on a Budget
When to go, what’s actually free, and where the costs actually are, so you’re not paying more than you need to.
Brighton has a reputation for being pricey, particularly on a summer weekend, but the city’s biggest draws, the beach, the Pier and the Lanes, cost nothing at all. Here’s how to keep the rest of the costs down without cutting the trip short.
Visit outside peak summer weekends
Weekday visits and the shoulder months, spring and early autumn, bring noticeably lower hotel prices than summer weekends, when day-trippers and stag and hen parties push demand right up. Winter runs cheaper still, and the seafront and the Lanes work just as well regardless of weather.
Brighton’s best sights are genuinely free
Walking the beach, the Pier and the Lanes all cost nothing, and the Royal Pavilion’s gardens are free to wander even if you skip the paid interior. The Fishing Museum on the seafront offers free entry too, and Brighton Marina is worth a browse without spending a penny.
Walk everywhere you can
Brighton is genuinely compact and walkable end to end, most central sights sit within a comfortable 20-minute stroll of each other. Buses cover Hove and the outskirts cheaply if you’d rather not walk the whole way, and a day bus ticket beats paying per journey if you’re making several trips.
The North Laine beats a seafront tourist meal
Brighton genuinely has more restaurants per capita than anywhere else in England, and the North Laine’s independent cafes run considerably cheaper than the seafront’s more tourist-priced spots. Fish and chips from a proper chip shop rather than a pier-side stall is a reliable, affordable classic too.
Consider Hove or a short walk from the centre
Hotels right on the seafront in central Brighton sit at the top of the price range given the location and the views. Hove, a short walk or bus ride along the coast, runs noticeably cheaper while staying well connected, and a stay slightly back from the water saves a genuine amount without losing much convenience.
That’s everything I’ve got.
