Berlin on a Budget
When to go, what’s actually free, and where the costs actually are, so you’re not paying more than you need to.
Berlin has a reputation for being pricey, but the city’s biggest, most important sights, the Gate, the Memorial, the East Side Gallery, cost nothing at all. Here’s how to keep the rest of the costs down without cutting the trip short.
Visit in winter, outside Christmas markets
Winter, outside the busy Christmas market weeks, brings noticeably lower hotel prices than the peak summer months. It’s cold, but Berlin’s world-class museums and the city’s countless coffee shops work just as well regardless of weather.
Berlin’s biggest sights are genuinely free
Walking the Brandenburg Gate, the Holocaust Memorial and the East Side Gallery cost nothing, and free walking tours run throughout the day covering most of the city’s major history. The Berlin Wall Memorial and Tempelhof, a former airport turned massive park, are both free too.
Get a day ticket and walk central Berlin
Berlin’s U-Bahn and S-Bahn network covers the whole city, a day ticket is widely cheaper than paying per journey if you’re moving around more than a couple of times. Central Berlin between the Gate and Museum Island is walkable too, worth covering on foot where the weather allows.
Currywurst beats a Potsdamer Platz tourist meal
A currywurst from a street stall is widely the classic, affordable Berlin meal, considerably cheaper than a sit-down restaurant right in the busiest tourist squares. Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain hold a similarly strong, more diverse and affordable food scene too.
Consider Friedrichshain over Mitte
Hotels right in Mitte, the historic centre, sit at the top of the price range given the location. Friedrichshain, a genuinely lively, more affordable neighbourhood a short U-Bahn ride away, runs noticeably cheaper while staying well connected to the main sights.
That’s everything I’ve got.
