Victoria for Couples

A tiered tray of scones and finger sandwiches beneath a grand hotel’s chandeliers, a garden built from an abandoned quarry that somehow feels like walking through a painting, and a harbour sunset with seaplanes drifting past, the version of Victoria that actually earns the word romantic.

Victoria does plenty of the romantic work on its own, a tea tradition built for lingering together, a garden made for slow wandering, and a harbour with a proper sunset. Here’s how to spend the time on the moments that are worth it.

The classic

Afternoon tea at the Fairmont Empress

A properly elegant way to spend an afternoon together, the Empress’s tiered trays and chandeliered dining room offer a proper, unhurried occasion, no need to rush between courses. Book weeks ahead in peak season, tables fill up fast.

“Walk Butchart Gardens together at golden hour rather than midday. The Sunken Garden catches a properly soft light in the late afternoon, and the crowds thin out considerably once the day-trip tours have gone.”
The stroll

Butchart Gardens at golden hour

A properly relaxed evening walk, the themed gardens catch a beautiful light in the late afternoon, considerably quieter once the day-trip crowds have thinned. A proper spot to slow down together before dinner.

Something different

A whale watching tour together

A properly memorable shared experience, spotting orcas or grey whales in the Salish Sea offers a genuine adventure together, a shared moment considerably different from a typical date. Worth booking ahead, most operators offer a sighting guarantee.

The view

Sunset over the Inner Harbour

A properly memorable way to spend an evening together, the harbour catches a properly striking light as seaplanes drift in and the Parliament Buildings’ lights come on. A proper spot to slow down together before dinner.

Something secluded

Abkhazi Garden

A properly quiet escape from the busier tourist routes, this intimate garden rewards a slow shared walk, considerably calmer than Butchart. A proper alternative if you’d rather avoid the crowds, and its teahouse offers a lovely stop too.

Where to eat

A harbourfront restaurant offers a proper special-occasion setting if the budget allows, several with genuinely striking views over the water. For something simpler, a candlelit dinner in Fernwood away from the busiest tourist streets makes for a low-pressure, still genuinely romantic evening together.

If a proposal is part of the plan

Sunset over the Inner Harbour comes up again and again for exactly this reason, free and properly dramatic with seaplanes and the Parliament Buildings as a backdrop. For something quieter, Abkhazi Garden or a private moment on a whale watching tour both offer real privacy, and afternoon tea at the Empress remains the classic, more elegant choice if that’s the goal.

That’s everything I’ve got.
