Where to Stay & Eat in Victoria
Which neighbourhood fits your trip, and where the good, honestly priced food actually is.
Victoria’s neighbourhoods each have a distinct character, central and historic in one direction, local and residential in the other. Here’s an honest breakdown of where to stay, and where to eat once you’re there.
Where to stay, by neighbourhood
The Inner Harbour
The Parliament Buildings, the Empress and most restaurants all within easy walking distance, the natural choice for a first trip focused on the classic sights. It’s also the priciest part of the city, worth it for the convenience on a short stay.
Chinatown & Old Town
A properly historic district home to Fan Tan Alley, North America’s narrowest street, Old Town offers a genuinely walkable base with cafés and boutiques. A short walk to the Inner Harbour, considerably calmer in the evenings.
Fernwood
A properly residential, local neighbourhood east of downtown, Fernwood offers noticeably cheaper accommodation while sitting within easy reach of the Harbour. A good base if you’d rather balance sightseeing with a slower evening scene.
Oak Bay
A properly scenic, upscale suburb along the coast, Oak Bay offers a genuine village atmosphere with independent shops and tearooms. A short drive or bus ride to downtown, worth it for a quieter, more residential stay.
Where to eat
A Chinatown café or fish and chips shop is genuinely worth seeking out rather than defaulting to the Harbour, a proper local spot offers considerably better value and often better food than a tourist-priced restaurant on the waterfront. Fresh seafood remains a local staple, worth seeking out from a spot with a proper queue.
Victoria’s fine dining scene is worth knowing about too, several nationally recognised restaurants sit alongside more affordable options in the same neighbourhoods. Fernwood and Oak Bay both hold a genuinely strong, more affordable dining scene beyond the tourist-heavy Harbour front.
A note on getting around and safety
Victoria is genuinely safe for visitors in the main tourist areas, low crime across nearly every neighbourhood. Downtown is walkable, and a car or seasonal bus covers Butchart Gardens and the outer areas efficiently.
That’s everything I’ve got.
