San Diego for Couples
A coastal cove built for standing still together, a botanical garden with a century of buildings to wander, and a wine region close enough for a proper afternoon out, the version of San Diego that actually earns the word romantic.
San Diego does plenty of the romantic work on its own, a coastline to walk along, a garden built for unhurried afternoons, and enough quiet corners to make even a short trip feel special. Here’s how to spend the time on the moments that are worth it.
Sunset at La Jolla Cove
A genuinely spectacular way to close out the day together, the cliffs at La Jolla Cove catch the light beautifully as the sun sets over the Pacific. Free, always open, and a proper, unhurried way to spend a shared evening.
Balboa Park’s gardens
A properly lovely, unhurried wander, Balboa Park holds several distinct gardens, the Japanese Friendship Garden and the Botanical Building among the most atmospheric. A picnic along El Prado rewards a slow afternoon away from the busier museum crowds too.
A wine tasting in Temecula
A properly relaxed way to spend an afternoon together, the wineries of nearby Temecula offer tastings and rolling countryside views considerably quieter than downtown. A drive of just over an hour, worth the whole afternoon.
The Embarcadero at golden hour
A properly relaxed evening walk, the Embarcadero’s waterfront path offers views over San Diego Bay with the USS Midway as a backdrop. Considerably quieter after the museums close, a proper spot to slow down together.
Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve
A properly quiet escape from the busier tourist routes, the coastal trails here reward a slow hike together, with striking clifftop views over the Pacific from the higher paths. A proper alternative to La Jolla if you’d rather avoid the crowds.
Where to eat
A La Jolla restaurant with an ocean view offers a proper special-occasion setting if the budget allows, several with genuinely striking views over the water. For something simpler, a candlelit dinner in Little Italy away from the busiest tourist streets makes for a low-pressure, still genuinely romantic evening together.
If a proposal is part of the plan
Sunset at La Jolla Cove comes up again and again for exactly this reason, a free, properly dramatic backdrop over the Pacific. For something quieter, Torrey Pines or a private garden corner in Balboa Park both offer real privacy, and a table with an ocean view in La Jolla remains the classic, more memorable choice if that’s the goal.
That’s everything I’ve got.
