Los Angeles for Couples
A skyline at sunset, a quiet cove, and the spots that actually earn the word romantic rather than just claiming it.
Los Angeles does a lot of the romantic work on its own, golden-hour beaches and skyline views come with the territory, but it’s easy to spend a couples trip stuck in traffic instead of finding the quieter spots. Here’s how to spend the time on the moments that are worth it.
Griffith Observatory at sunset
Sweeping views over the city, the Hollywood Sign, and out to the Pacific on a clear evening, free and widely considered LA’s single most romantic viewpoint. Stay past sunset for the free nighttime star shows and a properly dramatic backdrop of city lights once the sky goes dark.
El Matador Beach at golden hour
A dramatic, less crowded Malibu beach, sea caves and rugged cliffs that glow amber at sunset, considerably more private than Santa Monica or Venice. The walk down involves a steep staircase, worth it for the relative seclusion once you’re on the sand.
The Getty Center’s Central Garden
Free to enter, the Getty’s Central Garden pairs manicured design with sweeping city and ocean views, a genuinely calm, unhurried spot for a slower afternoon together. Pair it with the museum’s art collection or simply spend the visit outdoors, the garden alone justifies the trip.
Echo Park Lake
A local favourite away from the tourist crowds, swan-shaped pedal boats drift across the water beneath the downtown skyline, particularly lovely in summer when the lotus flowers bloom. A relaxed, low-key alternative to the coast, worth an evening if you want somewhere less staged.
A sunset cruise from Marina del Rey
A short cruise along the coast at golden hour gives skyline and ocean views without needing to drive far, a relaxed, low-effort evening on the water. Pair it with dinner at one of the marina’s waterfront restaurants afterward if you want to make a full evening of it.
Where to eat
Spago, the original West Hollywood location, remains one of the city’s most iconic date-night spots, book well ahead for a table on the terrace overlooking Beverly Hills. For something with a view, Perch LA’s rooftop in Downtown pairs French bistro food with twinkling city lights and the Central Library right below.
If a proposal is part of the plan
Griffith Observatory and El Matador Beach both come up again and again for exactly this reason, genuine drama without much staging required, particularly at sunset. For something quieter, the Getty Center’s gardens offer real privacy among the hedges, and Elysian Park’s lookout points give a properly secluded, less-visited alternative if the more famous spots feel too crowded for the moment.
That’s everything I’ve got.
