Where to Stay & Eat in Los Angeles

Which neighbourhood fits your trip, and where the good, honestly priced food actually is.

Los Angeles’ neighbourhoods each have a distinct character, and the right base depends on what kind of trip you’re having. Here’s an honest breakdown of where to stay, and where to eat once you’re there.

Where to stay, by neighbourhood

Best for first-timers

Hollywood / West Hollywood

The Walk of Fame, the TCL Chinese Theatre and easy access to Griffith Park, all within a manageable distance. West Hollywood specifically adds a genuinely strong restaurant and nightlife scene, a central pick if you’d rather split your time between sights and going out.

Best for the beach

Santa Monica

The pier, the beach, and the Third Street Promenade all within walking distance, a genuinely relaxed, family-friendly base compared to the city’s busier core. Prices sit higher here given the ocean proximity, but the walkability is rare for LA and worth it if the coast is the priority.

Best for value and culture

Downtown LA

Some of the city’s best hotel deals, walking distance to the Arts District, Little Tokyo, and Grand Central Market. It’s more of a concrete, commercial feel than the coast, though the food and museum scene here has become genuinely strong in recent years.

Best for glamour and calm

Beverly Hills

Palm-lined streets, Rodeo Drive, and a noticeably quieter, more upscale pace than Hollywood or Downtown. A genuine splurge destination, worth it if a polished, classic LA stay matters more than budget.

Where to eat

Grand Central Market in Downtown LA is the single best spot for variety at reasonable prices, dozens of stalls covering everything from Mexican to Thai to classic American diner food. Koreatown holds some of the city’s best value dining, Korean BBQ and late-night eats considerably cheaper than the Westside equivalent.

For something more polished, West Hollywood and Beverly Hills hold LA’s fine-dining scene, Spago among the most iconic names, worth booking well ahead. LA’s taco trucks, wherever you find a good one, remain some of the most reliably excellent, cheap food in the entire city.

“A restaurant with valet parking on the Westside is pricing for the address, not necessarily the food. Head to Koreatown or the Arts District instead, and both the food and the bill tend to improve.”

A note on safety and getting around

Los Angeles is generally safe for visitors in the main tourist areas, standard city precautions apply, particularly around Downtown at night and in car parking situations, don’t leave valuables visible. A car is close to essential given the distances, factor rental costs and LA’s notorious traffic into your planning from the start.

That’s everything I’ve got.
