Best Time to Visit Savannah

A humid subtropical climate with one of the country’s biggest St. Patrick’s Day parties thrown in, broken down so you can pick the trip you actually want.

There’s no single correct month to visit Savannah, it comes down to how much heat and humidity you’re willing to tolerate, and whether St. Patrick’s Day crowds appeal or not. Here’s how the year actually breaks down.

The short answer

March-May, or September-November

Spring and fall bring Savannah’s most comfortable weather, mild temperatures without the intense heat and humidity of summer. Spring also brings St. Patrick’s Day, one of the largest celebrations in the country, considerably busier and pricier as a result.

“Choose fall over spring if price and crowds matter more than blooming gardens, genuinely. The weather is nearly as good, and hotel rates run noticeably lower once the St. Patrick’s Day rush has passed.”
Peak season

Spring (March-May): busiest, priciest

Spring brings Savannah’s heaviest crowds and highest hotel prices, St. Patrick’s Day and blooming azaleas both drawing visitors from across the country. Book well ahead if travelling this window, particularly around mid-March.

Low season

Summer (June-August): hottest, most humid

Summer brings Savannah’s most intense heat and humidity, considerably more draining for a full day of walking than the rest of the year. Prices dip slightly given the tougher conditions, and hurricane season runs through this window too.

Month by month, the short version

December-February: mild winter, cheapest, quietest.
March: St. Patrick’s Day, busiest and priciest window.
April-May: a genuine sweet spot, still mild, thinning crowds.
June-August: hot, humid, hurricane season begins.
September-October: the other best window, mild, quieter.
November: cooling down, still a reasonable window for sightseeing.

Events worth timing around

St. Patrick’s Day each March is genuinely one of the largest celebrations in the country, the fountain in Forsyth Park dyed green and the whole city turned out for a parade. The Savannah Music Festival each spring and Savannah’s Ghost Tours around Halloween add a proper counterpoint to the city’s calendar too.

That’s everything I’ve got.
