Best Time to Visit Kyoto
Two spectacular seasons, cherry blossoms and autumn foliage, both drawing genuinely enormous crowds, broken down so you can pick the trip you actually want.
There’s no single correct month to visit Kyoto, it depends whether you’re chasing cherry blossoms, autumn colour, or a quieter trip without either. Here’s how the year actually breaks down.
Late March-early April, or November
Cherry blossom season, typically peaking late March into early April, and autumn foliage, usually mid to late November, both bring Kyoto’s most spectacular scenery. Both windows also bring the year’s heaviest crowds, book accommodation and popular sights well ahead.
Cherry blossom and autumn foliage: busiest, priciest
These two windows bring Kyoto’s heaviest crowds and highest hotel prices, exact blossom and foliage timing shifts slightly year to year based on weather. Book well ahead if travelling either window, particularly for accommodation.
Summer (July-August): hottest, most humid, cheapest
Summer brings Kyoto’s most intense heat and humidity, considerably more draining for a full day of temple-hopping. Prices dip given the tougher conditions, and the sights themselves work well regardless of the weather.
Month by month, the short version
December-February: cold, quiet, occasional snow at temples.
March-April: cherry blossoms, busiest and priciest window.
May-June: mild, rainy season begins toward June’s end.
July-August: hot, humid, cheapest hotel rates.
September-October: cooling down, thinning crowds.
November: autumn foliage, the other busiest window.
Events worth timing around
Gion Matsuri each July is genuinely one of Japan’s most famous festivals, a month-long celebration culminating in a parade of elaborately decorated floats through the city. Hanatouro light-up events at Arashiyama and Higashiyama each spring and winter add a proper counterpoint to the city’s calendar too.
That’s everything I’ve got.
