Best Time to Visit San Francisco
Weather, crowds and prices, broken down so you can pick the trip you actually want.
There’s no single correct month to visit San Francisco, it depends whether you’re chasing good weather, low prices, or thin crowds, and those three rarely line up on the same dates. Here’s how the year actually breaks down.
September-October
Locals call it the city’s real summer, warm, sunny days around 70°F with little of the fog that dominates June through August. Karl the Fog, the city’s famous marine layer, has largely burned off by September, and crowds thin noticeably compared to peak summer while the weather stays at its best all year.
June-August: busiest, foggiest, still pricey
Summer brings San Francisco’s heaviest tourist crowds despite genuinely unpredictable weather, expect cool, foggy mornings, particularly in August, when locals call the persistent grey “Fogust.” Pride events fill June, and Outside Lands, the city’s major music festival, takes over Golden Gate Park in August. Book well ahead if travelling during this window.
Winter (December-February): cheapest, wettest
January and February bring San Francisco’s lowest hotel prices, outside the December holiday week, and its thinnest crowds. Rain sets in from November through February, temperatures hover around 50-57°F, but the city’s museums, cable cars and cozy neighbourhood restaurants all work just as well regardless of weather.
Month by month, the short version
January-February: coldest, wettest, cheapest, good for museums and indoor culture.
March-April: shoulder season begins, mild and increasingly bright, wildflowers around Twin Peaks.
May: a genuine sweet spot, mild, sunny, thinning spring crowds.
June-July: peak season, Pride in June, persistent fog particularly by August.
August: the foggiest month, Outside Lands festival in Golden Gate Park.
September-October: the best weather of the year, warm, sunny, less fog.
November-December: cooling and wetter, festive and walkable, an underrated quiet window.
Events worth timing around
Pride, held in late June, draws huge crowds for the parade and citywide celebrations, book well ahead if attending. Outside Lands, a major music festival, takes over Golden Gate Park for three days each August, and the Cherry Blossom Festival in April brings a lively cultural celebration to Japantown.
That’s everything I’ve got.
