Best Time to Visit Melbourne
A temperate climate with a genuinely famous reputation for four seasons in one day, broken down so you can pick the trip you actually want.
There’s no single correct month to visit Melbourne, it comes down to whether you’re chasing warm laneway weather, a specific sporting event, or a quieter trip without either. Here’s how the year actually breaks down.
March-May, or September-November
Autumn and spring bring Melbourne’s most comfortable weather, mild temperatures without the summer’s heat or winter’s chill. Both windows offer good conditions for a full day walking the laneways and the Great Ocean Road drive alike.
Summer (December-February): warmest, busiest, priciest
Summer brings Melbourne’s warmest weather and heaviest crowds, hotel prices climb accordingly, particularly around the Australian Open each January. Book well ahead if travelling this window, particularly for accommodation.
Winter (June-August): coolest, cheapest
Winter brings Melbourne’s coolest, wettest weather, considerably more layering required for a full day outdoors. Prices dip given the cooler conditions, and the laneway cafés and cultural sights work well regardless of the weather.
Month by month, the short version
December-February: warmest, busiest, Australian Open in January.
March-April: cooling down, still comfortable, thinning crowds.
May: a genuine sweet spot before winter sets in.
June-August: coolest, cheapest, wettest.
September: AFL Grand Final month, busy in the city.
October-November: the other best window, mild, comfortable.
Events worth timing around
The Australian Open each January is genuinely one of the biggest events on the tennis calendar, worth timing a visit around if it appeals, though it also drives up hotel prices considerably. The AFL Grand Final each September brings a proper local counterpoint too, the whole city gathering around the sport that defines much of its identity.
That’s everything I’ve got.
