2 Day Cardiff Itinerary
Two full days, split so you’re not backtracking, with the castle and the city centre on day one and Cardiff Bay on day two.
Two days gives Cardiff proper room to breathe, enough time for the castle’s layered history and the arcades on one day, then the whole of Cardiff Bay on the other. Here’s how I’d split it.
Castle & City Centre
Start at Cardiff Castle, allowing a proper couple of hours for the grounds, the Norman keep and the Victorian apartments. Walk through the Victorian shopping arcades afterward, Castle Arcade and Morgan Arcade both worth a browse, before lunch at Cardiff Central Market.
In the afternoon, take in the National Museum Cardiff, free entry and a strong art collection, then walk past the Principality Stadium, built right into the city centre along the River Taff. Finish the day with dinner in the city centre.
Afternoon Cardiff Central Market, the National Museum, the Principality Stadium
Evening Dinner in the city centre
Cardiff Bay
Spend the day at Cardiff Bay, a former industrial dock transformed into a proper waterfront, home to the Wales Millennium Centre, the Senedd and the Pierhead Building. Techniquest, a hands-on science centre, is worth a stop if you’ve got kids in tow.
In the afternoon, walk the Cardiff Bay Barrage toward Penarth, a genuinely pleasant stretch with views back over the bay. Finish the day with dinner at the Bay, several strong independent restaurants line the waterfront.
Afternoon The barrage walk toward Penarth, Techniquest
Evening Dinner at Cardiff Bay
Getting around across both days
Central Cardiff is genuinely walkable, most of day one’s sights sit within a comfortable stroll of each other. A bus or water taxi is worth it for Cardiff Bay on day two, a short but proper distance from the centre.
If you only have time for one thing each day
Day one, make it Cardiff Castle, genuinely the single best introduction to the city’s layered history. Day two, make it the barrage walk, a proper contrast to the castle’s grandeur and one of the best free views the city has to offer.
That’s everything I’ve got.
