Best Time to Visit Washington DC

Weather, crowds and prices, broken down so you can pick the trip you actually want.

There’s no single correct month to visit Washington DC, it depends whether you’re chasing the cherry blossoms, low prices, or thin crowds, and those three rarely line up on the same dates. Here’s how the year actually breaks down.

The short answer

Late March-April, or September-October

Spring brings DC’s most famous window, the cherry blossoms typically peak late March to early April, though the exact dates shift year to year and are worth checking closer to your trip. Fall offers a similarly mild, comfortable alternative without the peak blossom crowds.

“Don’t build your whole trip around the cherry blossoms without a backup plan, genuinely. Peak bloom is notoriously hard to predict more than a couple of weeks out, and DC’s spring weather can swing wildly either way.”
Peak season

Spring (March-April): cherry blossoms, busiest, priciest

Spring brings the National Cherry Blossom Festival and the city’s biggest crowds, hotel prices climb accordingly and popular attractions get properly busy. Book well ahead if travelling this window, particularly for accommodation near the Tidal Basin.

Low season

Winter (December-February): cheapest, quietest, coldest

Winter brings DC’s lowest hotel prices and thinnest crowds, alongside cold, sometimes snowy weather. The Smithsonian museums and other indoor attractions work well regardless, and the National Mall’s monuments are still walkable, just considerably chillier.

Month by month, the short version

January-February: coldest, cheapest, quietest, good for museums.
March-April: cherry blossoms, busiest and priciest of the year.
May-June: a genuine sweet spot, warm and mild before summer’s peak humidity.
July-August: hot and humid, still busy with summer visitors.
September-October: the other best window, mild, thinning crowds.
November-December: cooling down, festive around the holidays, considerably quieter by December.

Events worth timing around

The National Cherry Blossom Festival, held each spring, is genuinely the city’s biggest annual draw, parades and events across several weeks alongside the blossoms themselves. The Fourth of July brings fireworks over the National Mall, one of the most famous displays in the country, though the crowds and security requirements make it a proper commitment to attend in person. The Marine Corps Marathon each October also draws a considerable crowd of runners and spectators.

That’s everything I’ve got.
