Cambridge on a Budget
When to go, what’s actually free, and where the costs actually are, so you’re not paying more than you need to.
Cambridge has a reputation for being pricey, and it can be, but the city’s best museum and its most scenic walk both cost nothing at all. Here’s how to keep the rest of the costs down without cutting the trip short.
Visit January-March
Winter brings Cambridge’s lowest hotel prices, well below the rates charged during the busy spring and summer months. It’s cold and colleges keep more restricted hours, but the Fitzwilliam Museum and the city’s other free attractions work just as well regardless of weather. Coaches also run considerably cheaper than trains if you’re not pressed for time.
Cambridge’s best sights are genuinely free
The Fitzwilliam Museum, one of the best university museums in the country, costs nothing to enter, and simply walking the Backs along the river past the colleges is free too. Free walking tours depart from outside the Round Church several times daily, and Evensong at King’s College Chapel, during term time, is a properly moving free experience.
Walk everywhere, or hire a bike
Cambridge’s city centre is easily flat and walkable end to end, most colleges and museums sit within a comfortable stroll of each other. Bikes are cheap to hire and considerably more useful for reaching Grantchester or the outer colleges, worth it over paying for buses or taxis around the compact centre.
The market beats a King’s Parade tourist meal
Cambridge Market Square offers widely good value street food, a falafel wrap or a cheesy bun for under £10, considerably cheaper than a sit-down restaurant on King’s Parade. Mill Road, east of the centre, holds an eclectic, more affordable food scene too, worth the short walk for lunch.
Consider staying just outside the centre
Hotels right on King’s Parade or in the historic centre sit at the top of the price range given the location. Areas a short walk or bus ride out, or the YHA Cambridge hostel, run noticeably cheaper while staying well connected to the main sights.
That’s everything I’ve got.
