Sydney with Kids
A ferry ride to a zoo with harbour views, a splash pad that costs nothing, and a coastal walk built for small legs, the version of Sydney that actually works with children in tow.
Sydney is genuinely one of the more family-friendly big cities anywhere, beaches, free playgrounds and stroller-friendly transport at nearly every turn. Here’s how to spend the time on what actually works with kids.
Taronga Zoo
Widely the easiest win in the city with kids, the short ferry ride from Circular Quay is half the fun, and the zoo’s cable car glides right over the animal enclosures. Koalas, wallabies and giraffes with harbour views in the background, a properly memorable combination.
Darling Quarter
A properly brilliant free playground, splash pads, balance ropes, slides and climbing frames right in Darling Harbour, worth packing a towel and swimmers for. The Australian National Maritime Museum sits right nearby too, tall ships and a real submarine kids can climb aboard, free entry.
The Australian Museum
A properly excellent stop for dinosaur-obsessed kids, tyrannosaur skeletons, fossil eggs and even fossilised dinosaur dung sit alongside the Surviving Australia exhibition on the country’s most dangerous critters. Hands-on touch screens and interactive elements keep the whole visit properly engaging.
The Bondi to Bronte coastal walk
An easily manageable stretch for families, roughly one kilometre from the Bondi Promenade to Bronte Beach, cliff-top views the whole way and a kiosk at Tamarama if anyone needs a break. Bronte’s playground and shallow splash zone make for a proper reward at the end.
Luna Park
Opened in 1935 and widely still one of the most fun things to do in the city, the harbourside amusement park’s classic rides sit right beneath the Harbour Bridge. A properly nostalgic day out, particularly for kids who love a rollercoaster or a Ferris wheel with a view.
If the weather turns
WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo, tucked into Darling Harbour, works well as a full indoor day, koalas and Tasmanian devils across 10 interactive zones. The Powerhouse Museum offers a genuinely strong science and technology alternative too, and Harbourside’s indoor playground above the food court covers younger kids on a properly wet day.
Eating with kids
The Chinese Garden of Friendship holds dumpling brunches and dress-up activities that go down properly well with younger kids. Darling Harbour’s Harbourside food court offers an easy, wide-ranging option too, and a fish and chips lunch at Bondi or Coogee makes for a reliable, low-fuss beachside meal.
A few practical notes
Sydney is widely one of the safer, more stroller-friendly cities to explore with kids, ramps, elevators and wide doorways make public transport considerably easier than in most cities. Pack sunscreen and hats regardless of season, the UV index runs high year-round and catches plenty of visitors off guard.
That’s everything I’ve got.
