Where to Stay & Eat in Denver
Which neighbourhood fits your trip, and where the good, honestly priced food actually is.
Denver’s neighbourhoods each have a distinct character, historic and central in one direction, artsy and industrial in the other. Here’s an honest breakdown of where to stay, and where to eat once you’re there.
Where to stay, by neighbourhood
LoDo
Union Station, Coors Field and the Capitol all within easy walking distance, the natural choice for a first trip focused on the main sights. It’s also the busiest and priciest part of the city, worth it for the convenience on a short stay.
RiNo
A genuinely eclectic, artsy district north of downtown, RiNo offers a properly local brewery and mural scene with a strong, independent food culture throughout. A short walk or rideshare from downtown, and noticeably cheaper too.
Capitol Hill
A properly historic, residential neighbourhood just east of downtown, Capitol Hill runs noticeably cheaper than LoDo while staying well connected and offering a strong, independent restaurant scene of its own.
Highland
A charming, walkable neighbourhood across the river from downtown, Highland offers a strong café and restaurant scene with a calmer evening atmosphere. A short bridge walk or rideshare from LoDo.
Where to eat
Green chile is genuinely a Denver staple, smothered over burritos, fries or nearly anything else, worth seeking out from a proper local spot rather than a chain. RiNo and Highland hold a properly strong, more affordable dining scene too, breweries and independent restaurants throughout.
For something more traditional, a Denver steakhouse remains a classic choice given Colorado’s ranching history, and the city’s craft beer scene is genuinely one of the best in the country, worth a proper brewery crawl if that’s your thing.
A note on getting around and safety
Denver is genuinely safe for visitors in the main tourist areas, low crime beyond the usual pickpocket risk in crowded spots downtown. The free 16th Street MallRide covers the centre, and a rideshare handles RiNo, Highland and the outer neighbourhoods efficiently.
That’s everything I’ve got.
