Where to Stay & Eat in Austin

Which neighbourhood fits your trip, and where the good, honestly priced food actually is.

Austin’s neighbourhoods each have a distinct character, and the right base depends on what kind of trip you’re having. Here’s an honest breakdown of where to stay, and where to eat once you’re there.

Where to stay, by neighbourhood

Best for first-timers

Downtown

The Capitol, Sixth Street and the Congress Avenue Bridge all within easy walking distance, the natural choice for a first trip focused on the main sights. It’s also the loudest and priciest part of the city, worth it for the convenience on a short stay.

Best for character and food

South Congress (SoCo)

A genuinely eclectic, boutique-heavy neighbourhood just across the bridge from downtown, South Congress offers a properly local food and shopping scene with the classic Capitol view built in. A short walk from downtown, and noticeably calmer at night.

Best for creativity and value

East Austin

A genuinely eclectic, rapidly growing part of the city, street art, food trucks and independent breweries throughout. A short rideshare from downtown, and noticeably cheaper too.

Best for outdoor access

Zilker

Right beside Barton Springs Pool and Zilker Park, this neighbourhood suits anyone building a trip around the outdoors. Quieter than downtown, with a strong, laid-back food scene of its own along Barton Springs Road.

Where to eat

Breakfast tacos are genuinely essential rather than optional, nearly every neighbourhood has a strong local contender worth seeking out over a chain. Barbecue holds a similarly central place, Franklin Barbecue is the famous, queue-worthy choice, though Terry Black’s or La Barbecue both offer excellent brisket with a shorter wait.

Food trucks hold a properly central place in the city’s food culture too, entire lots of them clustered together across East Austin and South Congress. Tex-Mex is worth seeking out beyond the tourist strip as well, Austin does it considerably better than most cities north of the border.

“A restaurant right on Sixth Street is pricing for the tourist walking past, not necessarily the food. Head into East Austin or South Congress instead, and both the food and the bill tend to improve.”

A note on getting around and safety

Austin is genuinely safe for visitors in the main tourist areas, low crime beyond the usual pickpocket risk in crowded spots like Sixth Street at night. Downtown is walkable, and a rideshare covers East Austin, South Congress and Zilker efficiently.

That’s everything I’ve got.
