Austin on a Budget

When to go, what’s actually free, and where the costs actually are, so you’re not paying more than you need to.

Austin has a reputation for being pricey, particularly during SXSW, but the city’s most iconic experience, watching the bats emerge from the Congress Avenue Bridge, costs nothing at all. Here’s how to keep the rest of the costs down without cutting the trip short.

Timing

Avoid SXSW and ACL Fest, visit in winter

SXSW in March and Austin City Limits Festival in October both bring noticeably inflated hotel prices and packed crowds across the whole city. Winter, particularly January and February, offers noticeably lower rates and thinner crowds, and Austin’s food truck scene stays lively regardless of season.

“Skip a paid pool day and swim at Barton Springs Pool for free before 8am, genuinely. Early entry is unstaffed and unticketed, a proper local secret hiding in plain sight.”
Sightseeing

Austin’s biggest draws are genuinely free

Watching the bat emergence at the Congress Avenue Bridge costs nothing, and the Texas State Capitol offers free guided tours daily. Zilker Park and the botanical garden are free to wander too, and the LBJ Presidential Library has no admission charge.

Getting around

Walk downtown, rideshare for the rest

Downtown Austin is genuinely compact and walkable, most major sights sit within a comfortable stroll of each other. A rideshare or bike is worth it for Barton Springs or East Austin specifically, both a proper distance from the core and not well served by transit.

Eating

Food trucks beat a Sixth Street tourist meal

Austin’s food truck scene offers widely good, locally owned food, considerably cheaper than a sit-down restaurant right on Sixth Street. Breakfast tacos from a proper local spot rather than a tourist-priced version are worth seeking out too, Austin’s signature start to the day done right.

Where to stay

Consider East Austin over downtown

Hotels right downtown or on Sixth Street sit at the top of the price range given the location. East Austin, a short rideshare across the highway, runs noticeably cheaper while offering a genuinely strong, more local food and coffee scene of its own.

That’s everything I’ve got.
