Things to Do in Inverness

Prices, opening hours, best times to visit and the stuff nobody tells you, everything you need for a first trip to Inverness, Scotland, plus one pigeon's opinions on all of it.

Inverness calls itself the capital of the Highlands, and it earns the title, a real city at the mouth of a river and loch that's made this corner of Scotland famous for reasons that have nothing to do with mythical creatures, even if that's usually the first thing people mention. This is the proper guide to things to do in Inverness, what things actually cost, when to go, and which bits deserve your time. Four main stops below, plus a quiz at the bottom to see if you were paying attention.

01 / The nickname I asked about

Inverness, Capital of the Highlands

I asked in the quiz what nickname reflects Inverness's position at the heart of northern Scotland, and it's the capital of the Highlands, a title it holds thanks to its position at the mouth of the River Ness, close to the loch of the same name. It's very much a working city rather than just a tourist gateway, shopping, restaurants and its own distinct character alongside the obvious appeal as a base for exploring the wider Highlands.

The Ness Islands, a set of small wooded islands connected by Victorian footbridges right in the middle of the river, make for one of the nicest free walks in the city centre, a peaceful green escape without leaving town.

Price Free to walk the Ness Islands and riverside
"I call this a great spot to watch tourists search for a monster, and I mean that with real affection. I've seen a lot of hopeful faces on those boat tours."
02 / The loch I asked about

Loch Ness

The answer to the second quiz question: Loch Ness lies just south of Inverness, famous worldwide for its legendary resident, Nessie, and remarkably impressive in its own right regardless of what may or may not be swimming in it, 24 miles long and over 700 feet deep, the largest loch by volume in the British Isles. Boat cruises run regularly from Dochgarroch, a short drive from Inverness, taking in Urquhart Castle, a dramatic 13th-century ruin on the loch's edge, along the way.

A combined cruise and castle ticket is the easiest way to do both in one trip, and full-day tours from Inverness typically also stop at Fort Augustus and the Falls of Foyers if you want to see more of the loch's full length rather than just the northern end.

Price Loch Ness cruise around £19-£34 depending on operator and whether Urquhart Castle is combined
Getting there Boat tours depart from Dochgarroch, about a 15-minute drive from Inverness, or from Inverness Harbour itself
03 / The castle I asked about

Inverness Castle

I asked in the quiz which river Inverness Castle sits above, and it's the River Ness, exactly what gives both the castle and the city their name. The current red sandstone buildings date largely to the 19th century, following the destruction of an earlier medieval castle by Jacobite forces in 1746, just days before the Battle of Culloden, but reopened in February 2026 after a £47 million renovation as the Inverness Castle Experience, an immersive journey through Highland history, culture and landscape told through light, sound and film rather than traditional period rooms.

Allow around two hours for the full self-guided experience, including the roof terrace views over the river and city, one of the better vantage points in Inverness.

Price Adult tickets around £20 online, £22 walk-up

04 / The city's most walkable stretch

The River Ness & Ness Walk

The riverside path running through the city centre, past the castle and out toward the Ness Islands, is easily one of the best free things to do in Inverness, flat, well-maintained, and lined with churches, gardens and cafes along the way. Inverness Cathedral, on the west bank, is free to enter and a nice stop if you're already walking this stretch.

Boat tours also run from Inverness Harbour out under the Kessock Bridge and into the Moray Firth, a good option if you'd rather see the city from the water without committing to a full Loch Ness day trip.

Price Free to walk; Moray Firth boat tours cost extra

Best time to visit Inverness

May to September gives the most reliable weather for the Ness Islands walk and Loch Ness cruises, and it's when boat tour schedules run at their fullest. Inverness Castle Experience and the city's indoor attractions work fine year-round, so a wet or wintry visit doesn't rule out a good trip, it just shifts the balance away from the loch cruises.

Getting around Inverness

Inverness city centre, the castle, the cathedral and the Ness Islands, is compact and entirely walkable. Loch Ness itself requires a short drive or an organised tour, Dochgarroch, the main departure point for boat cruises, is about 15 minutes from the city centre. Inverness railway station sits right in the middle of town.

Frequently asked questions

Is Inverness worth visiting?
Yes, both as a destination in its own right, with a newly reopened castle experience and a genuinely pleasant riverside, and as the natural base for exploring Loch Ness and the wider Highlands.
How many days do you need in Inverness?
A day covers the castle, the Ness Islands and the riverside comfortably. Add a second day for a proper Loch Ness cruise and Urquhart Castle without rushing.
Is Inverness expensive?
Moderate. Inverness Castle Experience and Loch Ness cruises are the main paid attractions; the Ness Islands, the riverside walk and the cathedral all cost nothing.
What is Inverness famous for?
Being known as the capital of the Highlands, its position on the River Ness right by Loch Ness, and Inverness Castle, recently reopened as an immersive Highland history experience.

That's everything I've got.
