Things to Do in Glasgow

Prices, opening hours, best times to visit and the stuff nobody tells you, everything you need for a first trip to Glasgow, Scotland, plus one pigeon's opinions on all of it.

Glasgow built half the world's ships on the River Clyde, gave Britain one of its most distinctive architects, and still doesn't get the same tourist attention as Edinburgh, which honestly works in its favour. This is the proper guide to things to do in Glasgow, what things actually cost, when to go, and which bits deserve your time. Five main stops below, plus a quiz at the bottom to see if you were paying attention.

01 / The shipbuilding I asked about

Riverside Museum & the Tall Ship

I asked in the quiz what Glasgow's shipbuilding industry once made it one of the world's largest producers of, and the answer is ships themselves, the River Clyde earned a lasting reputation as the workshop for a huge share of the world's vessels through the 19th and 20th centuries. The award-winning Riverside Museum, right on the river, covers this transport heritage in full, cars, trams, bicycles and recreated street scenes from Glasgow's past, alongside the Clyde's shipbuilding story specifically.

Moored right beside the museum is the Tall Ship, the Glenlee, an original 19th-century sailing ship you can board and explore, a hands-on complement to the museum exhibits.

Price Free (donations welcome); Tall Ship admission also free
Hours Generally Mon-Thu & Sat 10am-5pm, Fri & Sun 11am-5pm
Address 100 Pointhouse Place, Glasgow G3 8RS
Official site glasgowlife.org.uk/riverside-museum
"The River Clyde built half the world's ships, apparently. I've built precisely zero, for context, and I still think I come out ahead on effort-to-reward ratio."
02 / The architect I asked about

Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Glasgow

The answer to the second quiz question: Charles Rennie Mackintosh, born in Glasgow, is the architect and designer most closely associated with the city's distinctive Art Nouveau style, his work including the Glasgow School of Art. Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, free to enter and one of Scotland's most popular attractions, holds the largest display in the city of the Glasgow Style he pioneered, stained glass, furniture, textiles and metalwork across six sections.

The Mackintosh House at The Hunterian recreates the home he shared with his wife Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh in exacting detail, and the Willow Tearooms, one of his original tearoom interiors on Sauchiehall Street, has been restored and is still open today, a rare surviving example you can actually sit inside.

Price Kelvingrove free; The Hunterian's Mackintosh House and the Willow Tearooms charge separately
Hours Kelvingrove: Mon-Thu & Sat 10am-5pm, Fri & Sun 11am-5pm
Address Kelvingrove: Argyle Street, Glasgow G3 8AG

03 / The word I asked about

The Glaswegian Dialect

I asked in the quiz what term describes both the local dialect and a person from Glasgow, and it's Glaswegian, one of the most distinctive accents in the UK, often cited by linguists as one of the harder British accents for outsiders to follow at speed. You'll hear it everywhere from taxi drivers to market traders, and it repays just listening to rather than trying to place every word.

The Barras Market in the East End, a long-running weekend flea market, is one of the best places to hear authentic Glaswegian conversation in its natural habitat alongside picking up bargains and street food.

Price Free to wander; bring cash for the Barras stalls
Hours Barras Market typically Sat-Sun
04 / Scotland's most popular modern art

Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA)

Housed in a striking neo-classical building in the city centre, GoMA is Scotland's most visited modern art museum, free to enter, with a rotating programme of contemporary exhibitions. The equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington outside, topped with a traffic cone, has become an unofficial Glasgow landmark in its own right, council attempts to stop the tradition have repeatedly failed against public affection for it.

Price Free (donations welcome)
Address Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow G1 3AH
05 / Tenement life, preserved

The Tenement House

A real hidden gem, a National Trust for Scotland property preserving an ordinary Glasgow tenement flat almost exactly as it was in the early 20th century, the home of one woman, Agnes Toward, who lived there for over 50 years and changed almost nothing. It's a small, quiet counterpoint to the grander museums, an honest glimpse of everyday Glasgow life rather than architecture or art.

Price Adult admission, check current National Trust for Scotland rates
Address 145 Buccleuch Street, Glasgow G3 6QN

Best time to visit Glasgow

May to September gives the most reliable weather for wandering the Barras and combining Kelvingrove with a walk through Kelvingrove Park. Glasgow's museums, Kelvingrove, Riverside, GoMA, are all free and work fine year-round, so a wet day doesn't rule out a good visit, it just shifts the balance indoors, which in this city is a perfectly strong option.

Getting around Glasgow

Glasgow's city centre attractions, GoMA and the Tenement House, sit within easy walking distance of each other, while Kelvingrove and Riverside are a short subway or bus ride out in the West End. The Glasgow Subway, the third-oldest underground system in the world, is a cheap, easy way to cover the wider city.
