Glasgow on a Budget

When to go, what’s actually free, and where the costs actually are, so you’re not paying more than you need to.

Glasgow is genuinely one of the best-value big cities in the UK, several of its finest museums cost nothing at all, a rare thing for a city this size. Here’s how to keep the rest of the costs down without cutting the trip short.

Timing

Visit outside the Christmas Markets and festival season

Glasgow’s hotel prices climb noticeably around the George Square Christmas Markets in November-December and during the city’s busiest festival dates. Visiting midweek or in the quieter shoulder months, spring and early autumn, keeps costs down without sacrificing much in the way of weather.

“Take the Citylink bus from Edinburgh rather than the train, genuinely. It’s a fraction of the price, the seats are comfortable, and the journey barely takes longer.”
Sightseeing

Glasgow’s museums are genuinely free

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the Gallery of Modern Art, the Hunterian Museum and the People’s Palace all offer free entry, a properly rare concentration of world-class collections without a ticket price. Glasgow Cathedral costs nothing too, donations welcome rather than required, and the Necropolis and the Mural Trail are both free to wander.

Getting around

Walk the centre, use the Subway for the rest

Glasgow’s city centre is easily walkable, and the Subway, a simple 15-station loop, covers the West End cheaply at £1.85 a ride. A day ticket is worth it over paying per journey if you’re using it more than a couple of times.

Eating

A brewery lunch beats a city centre tourist meal

Drygate and West Brewery near Glasgow Green both serve widely good, reasonably priced food alongside local beer, considerably better value than a sit-down restaurant right in the centre. The West End’s cafes around Ashton Lane offer a similarly strong, more affordable dining scene too.

Where to stay

Consider a hostel or the East End

Revolver Hostel, centrally located with beds from around £23 a night, comes recommended as a properly solid budget base. The East End, undergoing considerable regeneration in recent years, runs noticeably cheaper than the city centre while staying well connected by bus and Subway.

That’s everything I’ve got.

A note before you plan around this: prices, opening hours, booking requirements and admission details in this guide were correct at the time of writing, but venues change these often and sometimes without notice. Always check directly with the attraction or its official website before you travel or build a schedule around a specific time or price.

Before travelling to any destination featured on this site, please also check your government’s latest travel advice, as safety situations, entry requirements and travel warnings can change.
