Solo Travel in Dubai

A one-dirham boat ride, a sunrise safari with strangers, and a rooftop view that needs no company, the version of Dubai that works when it’s just you.

Dubai consistently ranks among the safest, most solo-friendly cities in the world, modern infrastructure, widely spoken English, and enough contrast between skyscrapers and souks to keep a solo trip endlessly interesting. Here’s how to spend the time on what actually works solo.

The classic

The Burj Khalifa, then the Dubai Fountain

A genuinely self-guided way to spend an evening, book At the Top ahead for the 124th floor, then walk down to the lake for the Dubai Fountain show, free and running every 30 minutes from 6pm. Between the two, you’ve covered the tallest building in the world and its most photographed free spectacle in one outing.

“Book a sunrise desert safari rather than an evening one, genuinely. The small-group format means you’re never sitting awkwardly alone waiting for the group photo, and I ended up having breakfast with three strangers from three different countries.”
Eating alone

Deira’s souks and tea houses

Old Dubai’s traditional cafeterias and tea houses treat solo dining as widely the norm rather than the exception, an authentic, low-pressure way to eat well without a reservation. A food tour works well too if you’d rather have company while tasting your way through the city.

Something quieter

An abra ride across Dubai Creek

One of the cheapest, most authentic experiences in the city, a traditional wooden water taxi costs barely more than a dirham and doubles as public transport, so you’re never really alone on board. Get off at the souks afterward for a wander through the Gold and Spice Souks.

Meeting people

A shared yacht tour or dhow cruise

An easy way to meet people while still feeling like a treat, the shared yacht concept lets you enjoy the Marina’s skyline at sunset without paying private charter prices. A dhow dinner cruise along the Creek offers a similar, slightly more traditional version of the same evening on the water.

After dark

Dubai Opera or a rooftop bar

One of the best solo evenings in the city, catch a performance at Dubai Opera, opera to jazz, an intimate setting that suits going alone without any awkwardness. Rooftop bars offer a lower-key alternative if a full show isn’t the mood, sunset views and a cocktail without needing company.

Staying safe

Dubai consistently ranks among the safest cities in the world for solo travellers, low crime and a heavy, visible police presence in tourist areas. Women-only metro carriages and pink taxis add further options for solo female travellers, and dressing modestly in older districts and traditional areas shows appropriate respect for local customs.

Getting around

The Dubai Metro is properly clean, efficient and cheap, get a Nol card and it’ll cover Downtown, the Marina and most major attractions easily. Taxis, Careem and Uber all work well for anywhere the metro doesn’t reach directly, and fares run low enough that riding the elevated Red Line purely for the views is worth doing at least once.

A few practical notes

English is genuinely widely spoken across Dubai, eliminating most language barriers that might complicate solo travel elsewhere in the region. Book the Burj Khalifa and any popular desert safaris ahead, particularly during peak season, and note that dune bashing and some adventure activities carry a minimum age requirement, worth checking before booking.

That’s everything I’ve got.

A note before you plan around this: prices, opening hours, booking requirements and admission details in this guide were correct at the time of writing, but venues change these often and sometimes without notice. Always check directly with the attraction or its official website before you travel or build a schedule around a specific time or price.
