Rio de Janeiro on a Budget
A world-famous beach that costs nothing to walk, and an exchange rate that stretches most budgets a properly long way, here’s how to keep the rest of the costs down too.
Rio is one of the more affordable major cities in South America to visit, the exchange rate stretches most budgets a long way, and Copacabana’s atmosphere costs nothing at all. Here’s how to keep the rest of the costs down without cutting the trip short.
The beaches are free
Walking Copacabana and Ipanema costs nothing, only Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain charge admission. Santa Teresa’s streets and the Selarón Steps are free to wander too.
Visit outside Carnival and New Year for lower prices
Rio’s hotel prices and crowds spike around Carnival each February or March and New Year’s Eve, considerably higher than the rest of the year given both events’ global draw. Booking outside these windows offers noticeably lower rates.
Use the metro and buses over taxis
Rio’s metro is genuinely cheap and efficient for central routes, and buses cover the rest of the city at a fraction of taxi fares. A rechargeable transit card covers both, worth picking up on arrival.
A per-kilo restaurant beats a Copacabana tourist spot
Per-kilo restaurants, pay-by-weight buffets found across the city, are widely a genuine Rio institution, considerably cheaper than a sit-down restaurant right on the beachfront. A pastel stand remains one of the better cheap eats too.
Consider Botafogo over Copacabana or Ipanema
Hotels right on Copacabana or Ipanema sit at the top of the price range given the location. Botafogo, a short metro ride away, runs noticeably cheaper while offering a genuinely strong, more local food scene of its own.
That’s everything I’ve got.
