Philadelphia on a Budget
When to go, what’s actually free, and where the costs actually are, so you’re not paying more than you need to.
Philadelphia has a genuine advantage over most American cities on a budget, its single biggest attraction, the Liberty Bell, costs nothing at all. Here’s how to keep the rest of the costs down without cutting the trip short.
Visit in spring or fall for lower prices
Summer brings Philadelphia’s highest hotel prices and heaviest crowds, particularly around Independence National Historical Park. Spring and fall instead offer noticeably lower rates and thinner crowds, and the city’s outdoor sights work just as well regardless.
Philadelphia’s biggest sights are genuinely free
The Liberty Bell Center costs nothing to visit, no tickets required, and Independence Hall’s timed entry tickets are free too, just book them ahead. Congress Hall, Franklin Court and several other sites within Independence National Historical Park charge no admission either.
Walk the historic core, PHLASH for the rest
Central Philadelphia around Independence Park is genuinely compact and walkable, most major sights sit within a comfortable stroll of each other. The PHLASH downtown loop bus is a properly cheap way to reach the Art Museum and Reading Terminal Market, just five dollars for a day pass.
Reading Terminal Market beats a tourist-strip cheesesteak
Reading Terminal Market’s food stalls offer widely good, affordable options across dozens of vendors under one historic roof. A proper neighbourhood cheesesteak spot away from the busiest tourist corners is worth seeking out too, considerably better value than the versions right by Independence Hall.
Consider Fishtown or University City over Old City
Hotels right in Old City near the historic sights sit at the top of the price range given the location. Fishtown and University City, both a short transit ride away, run noticeably cheaper while offering a genuinely strong, more local food and coffee scene of their own.
That’s everything I’ve got.
