Where to Stay & Eat in Philadelphia

Which neighbourhood fits your trip, and where the good, honestly priced food actually is.

Philadelphia’s neighbourhoods each have a distinct character, and the right base depends on what kind of trip you’re having. Here’s an honest breakdown of where to stay, and where to eat once you’re there.

Where to stay, by neighbourhood

Best for first-timers

Old City

The Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and Reading Terminal Market all within easy walking distance, the natural choice for a first trip focused on the main sights. It’s also the priciest part of the city, worth it for the convenience on a short stay.

Best for character and food

Fishtown

A genuinely creative, up-and-coming neighbourhood along the Delaware River, Fishtown offers a properly local coffee and food scene with independent breweries and restaurants throughout. A short transit ride from Old City, and noticeably cheaper too.

Best for value

University City

Home to the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel, University City runs noticeably cheaper than Old City while staying well connected via public transit. A strong, independent restaurant scene has grown here too.

Best for a quieter, historic base

Society Hill

Charming cobblestone streets and colonial-era row houses set Society Hill apart from the busier tourist corners, quieter than Old City while still an easy walk from the historic sights. A strong choice if you’d rather balance sightseeing with a calmer evening scene.

Where to eat

A cheesesteak is genuinely essential rather than optional, a proper neighbourhood spot rather than the version right outside the Liberty Bell offers considerably better value. Reading Terminal Market holds a properly good, more affordable spread too, everything from Amish baked goods to Pennsylvania Dutch cooking.

Philadelphia’s food scene runs strongly beyond the cheesesteak too, Fishtown and University City hold a genuinely diverse, more affordable dining scene, chain restaurants are rarely the better choice here.

“A cheesesteak spot right by the Liberty Bell is pricing for the tourist walking past, not necessarily the sandwich. Head into Fishtown or a proper neighbourhood spot instead, and both the food and the bill tend to improve.”

A note on getting around and safety

Philadelphia is genuinely safe for visitors in the main tourist areas, low crime beyond the usual pickpocket risk in crowded spots downtown. Central Philadelphia is walkable, and the PHLASH bus or SEPTA covers the outer neighbourhoods efficiently.

That’s everything I’ve got.
