Things to Do in Bristol

Prices, opening hours, best times to visit and the stuff nobody tells you, everything you need for a first trip to Bristol, England, plus one pigeon's opinions on all of it.

Right, Bristol. Mind the hills, and the street art, mostly the hills, a creative, slightly rebellious city with an engineering legacy to match its artistic one. This is the proper, no-nonsense guide to things to do in Bristol: what things actually cost, when to go, what to skip, and which bits are worth the walk. Six main stops below, plus a quiz elsewhere on this site to see if you were paying attention.

01 / Anonymous, and properly everywhere here

Banksy's Bristol

A Bristol-born street artist, famous worldwide for anonymous stencil work, nobody knows his real identity for certain, and the city takes a quiet pride in claiming him as its own. Several of his earlier works remain visible around the city, including the 'Well Hung Lover' near the Bristol Hippodrome and pieces around Stokes Croft, worth a self-guided walk if street art interests you.

The wider street art scene here goes well beyond just Banksy, Stokes Croft especially is packed with murals from a properly active, ongoing local scene, worth a proper wander rather than just chasing the one famous name.

Best area Stokes Croft and the city centre
"Nobody knows his real identity. I have my suspicions. I'm not naming names, professionally speaking."
02 / Finished after its designer died, tragically

Clifton Suspension Bridge

An iconic suspension bridge, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, spanning the dramatic Avon Gorge, finished after Brunel died, he never got to see his own completed design, a poignant detail that adds real weight to what's already an impressive piece of engineering. The visitor centre on the Clifton side covers the bridge's construction history in real depth.

Walking across it is free and well worth doing for the views down into the gorge, a proper contrast between Victorian engineering ambition and the natural landscape it spans.

Price Free to walk across (pedestrians); small toll for vehicles

"Finished after Brunel died. He never got to see it. I try not to take that personally on his behalf, but it's a real shame."
03 / Once dockland, now the city's social heart

Bristol Harbourside & the SS Great Britain

A floating harbourside area, once dockland, is now lined with bars, museums and the SS Great Britain, a properly lively waterfront that anchors much of the city's social life, restaurants and bars right along the water. The SS Great Britain herself, Brunel's pioneering iron-hulled steamship, has been beautifully restored and preserved in the very dry dock she was originally built in.

It's a good full afternoon out, harbourside wandering, the ship, and a proper meal at one of the waterfront restaurants, particularly pleasant on a mild evening.

Price SS Great Britain entry around £20 for adults
Hours Daily, roughly 10am–5.30pm, shorter in winter
Address Bristol Harbourside
"Excellent chip supply along that harbour wall. Research purposes only, obviously."
04 / A proper hilltop park, properly rewarding

Brandon Hill & Cabot Tower

One of Bristol's oldest parks, climbing steeply up from the harbourside, topped with Cabot Tower, built to commemorate John Cabot's 1497 voyage from Bristol to North America. The climb up the tower's narrow spiral staircase rewards you with sweeping views over the whole city, one of the better free viewpoints anywhere in Bristol.

It's a good, quieter escape from the busier harbourside, worth the climb (both up the hill and up the tower) for anyone wanting a proper overview of the city's layout.

05 / The hot air balloon capital of Europe, roughly

Bristol International Balloon Fiesta

Held annually each August, one of Europe's largest hot air balloon events, dozens of balloons launching from Ashton Court in a striking mass ascent, worth timing a visit around if your trip lines up with it. Even outside the festival, Bristol has a strong ballooning culture generally, given ideal geography for the sport.

It's free to attend, though parking and access can get properly busy, worth arriving early or using public transport if you're going during the festival dates.

Best time August, for the annual festival
Address Ashton Court, Bristol
06 / A properly good museum, and free

Bristol Museum & Art Gallery

A solid museum covering natural history, archaeology, and art, including a notable collection of works with local connections. It's free, well laid out, and a good option if the weather turns during your visit, a proper indoor alternative to the harbourside and hilltop views elsewhere on this list.

The building itself, an Edwardian Baroque structure, is worth a look even if museums aren't usually your priority.

Price Free (donations welcome)
Hours Daily, roughly 10am–5pm
Address Queens Road, Bristol

Best time to visit Bristol

May through September gives the most comfortable weather for the amount of walking (and hill climbing) this list involves, and it's when the Balloon Fiesta and the harbourside's outdoor dining scene are both at their best.

Bristol's museums and street art work well year-round, worth visiting even outside summer if the Balloon Fiesta timing doesn't matter to your trip.

Getting around Bristol

Central Bristol, the harbourside, and Brandon Hill are all easily walkable, though the city's famous hills mean some routes are more of a workout than others. Buses cover destinations further out, and Clifton, with its suspension bridge, is a proper uphill walk or a short bus ride from the centre.
