Things to Do in Cappadocia
Prices, opening hours, best times to visit and the stuff nobody tells you, everything you need for a first trip to Cappadocia, Turkey, plus one pigeon's opinions on all of it.
Right, Cappadocia. Hot air balloons at sunrise, cave hotels, rock formations that look faintly ridiculous, in a good way, genuinely one of the more otherworldly landscapes I've had the pleasure of flying over. This is the proper, no-nonsense guide to things to do in Cappadocia: what things actually cost, when to go, what to skip, and which bits are worth the pre-dawn alarm. Six main stops below, plus a quiz elsewhere on this site to see if you were paying attention.
Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Rides
Cappadocia has become one of the world's most popular destinations for hot air ballooning, dozens of balloons drifting over the valleys at dawn is a genuinely striking sight, whether you're in one of the balloons yourself or watching from the ground. Flights typically last around an hour, drifting low over the fairy chimneys and rock valleys as the sun comes up, genuinely one of the more memorable experiences on this whole site.
Weather dependent cancellations are common, particularly with wind, book flexible dates if possible and confirm the night before, this is genuinely not guaranteed to happen on your scheduled morning.
Best time Year-round, though spring and autumn offer the most reliable flying conditions
Getting there Pickup typically included from Goreme or Urgup hotels
Fairy Chimneys & the Goreme Open-Air Museum
Cappadocia's distinctive tall, cone-shaped rock formations are commonly known as fairy chimneys, formed by centuries of erosion carving soft volcanic rock into these unmistakable shapes, some capped with harder rock that's resisted erosion, creating the genuinely strange, top-heavy silhouettes the region is famous for. The Goreme Open-Air Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves rock-cut churches and monasteries carved directly into these formations by early Christian communities, several with genuinely well-preserved Byzantine frescoes.
It's a proper half-day visit, the museum itself plus a wander through the surrounding valleys, worth combining with one of Cappadocia's many marked hiking trails through the fairy chimney landscape.
Hours Daily, roughly 8am–5pm, longer in summer
Address Goreme, Cappadocia
Underground Cities
Cappadocia is home to extensive underground settlements, some capable of housing thousands, originally built to provide shelter during invasions, entire multi-level cities carved beneath the surface, complete with ventilation shafts and stables, genuinely remarkable feats of ancient engineering. Derinkuyu and Kaymakli are the two most visited, both extending many levels deep, with narrow tunnels connecting living quarters, churches, and storage rooms.
The tunnels are genuinely narrow and low in places, claustrophobic visitors should be aware before committing to the deeper levels, most sites offer routes of varying depth and difficulty.
Hours Daily, roughly 8am–5pm
Getting there Derinkuyu and Kaymakli both a short drive from Goreme
Cave Hotels
Cappadocia's cave hotels, rooms genuinely carved into or built within the region's soft volcanic rock, are a proper part of the experience here, not just a novelty, many combine historic cave architecture with genuinely comfortable, sometimes luxurious modern amenities. Staying in one, even for a night or two, adds real texture to a Cappadocia visit beyond just the daytime sightseeing.
Prices vary enormously depending on the level of luxury, from simple, budget-friendly cave guesthouses to genuinely high-end boutique properties, worth deciding your budget before browsing given the range.
Best area Goreme and Uchisar
Uchisar Castle
A natural rock formation, the tallest in the region, hollowed out over centuries into a genuine fortress and dwelling, offering the best panoramic view over the whole Cappadocia landscape from its summit. It's a shorter, easier climb than it might look from below, worth the trip for the view alone.
Sunset from the top is genuinely spectacular, the fairy chimney valleys stretching out in every direction as the light turns golden, worth timing your visit around if possible.
Hours Daily, roughly 8am–8pm

Rose Valley & Love Valley Hiking
Cappadocia's valleys, Rose Valley and Love Valley among the most scenic, offer a genuine network of marked hiking trails through the fairy chimney landscape, a good, free way to experience the terrain up close after seeing it from a balloon or a viewpoint. Rose Valley is particularly known for its colour at sunset, the rock genuinely taking on a rose-pink hue as the light changes.
Trails range from easy, flat walks to more strenuous routes, worth checking difficulty and length before setting out, and bring water, shade is limited across most of the valley terrain.
Best time Late afternoon for Rose Valley's colour change; morning for cooler hiking temperatures
Best time to visit Cappadocia
April through June and September through October give the most comfortable weather for hiking and the most reliable hot air balloon flying conditions, without summer's heat or winter's genuine cold and occasional snow.
Winter does bring a genuinely striking, quieter version of Cappadocia, snow-dusted fairy chimneys are a real sight, though balloon flights become less reliable and some outdoor sights get harder to access.
