Best Time to Visit Bristol
Weather, crowds, and one particular weekend in August where the sky fills with balloons, broken down so you can pick the trip you actually want.
There’s no single correct month for Bristol, it depends whether you’re chasing mild weather, a quieter city, or the sight of a hundred hot air balloons over the gorge. Here’s how the year actually breaks down.
May-June, or September
Late spring and early autumn bring Bristol’s most comfortable weather, mild without summer’s peak crowds or the price bump that comes with the Balloon Fiesta weekend in August. Both windows still give plenty of good weather for wandering Clifton and the harbourside.
The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, August
Europe’s largest hot air balloon festival takes place each August at Ashton Court, a free four-day event with mass balloon ascents at dawn and dusk. It draws huge crowds and pushes accommodation prices up considerably for the weekend, worth planning well ahead if this is the draw.
Winter (December-February): cheapest, quietest, coldest
Winter brings Bristol’s lowest accommodation prices and thinnest crowds, alongside cold, often wet weather typical of the South West. Indoor attractions like M Shed and the Bristol Aquarium work well regardless, and December brings a festive counterpoint with lights across the harbourside.
Month by month, the short version
January-February: coldest, cheapest, quietest, good for museums.
March-April: shoulder season begins, mild and increasingly busy.
May-June: a genuine sweet spot, warm without peak summer’s crowds.
July-August: busiest, warmest, the Balloon Fiesta in August.
September: the other best window, mild, thinning crowds.
October-December: cooling down, festive with harbourside lights in December.
Other events worth timing around
Upfest, one of Europe’s biggest street art and graffiti festivals, takes over Bedminster each summer, a fitting fit for a city built around Banksy’s legacy. Bristol Harbour Festival, held in July, brings tall ships, live music and free entertainment across the whole waterfront.
That’s everything I’ve got.
