Cape Town with Kids
A colony of wild African penguins waddling right past your feet, a shark tank you can watch feeding time at, and a cable car ride to the top of one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, the version of Cape Town built for families.
Cape Town works well with kids in tow, several of its best sights are genuinely wildlife-focused by nature, and Table Mountain’s cable car makes a dramatic sight accessible without a strenuous hike. Here’s how I’d spend a family day here.
Boulders Beach
A properly magical sight for kids, this protected beach is home to a colony of wild African penguins, genuinely close enough to watch from the boardwalk. The granite boulders also make the water calm and safe for a swim afterward.
Two Oceans Aquarium
A properly engaging aquarium at the V&A Waterfront, home to sharks, penguins, turtles and a dedicated children’s play centre. Feeding times for the predator exhibit and penguins run daily, worth timing a visit around.
Table Mountain by cable car
A properly dramatic sight for kids, the rotating cable car ride up offers sweeping views the whole way, no hiking required. The summit’s flat plateau and marked trails make for an easy, safe wander once you’re up there.
A Cape Point day trip
A properly scenic family day out, the drive along Chapman’s Peak to Cape Point offers dramatic coastal views, and a stop at Boulders Beach along the way combines two highlights in one trip. A full day out, worth planning ahead of the rest of the itinerary.
Green Point Urban Park
A proper green space near the Waterfront, this park has open lawns, water features and playgrounds for running around. Free, unhurried, and an easy way to burn off energy between the bigger sights.
Where to eat with kids
A boerewors roll is genuinely an easy, reliable win with kids, a South African sausage in a bread roll, cheap and available at most markets. The V&A Waterfront’s food court works well for families too, plenty of variety in one covered space.
A few practical notes
Central Cape Town is genuinely stroller-friendly, mostly flat, paved paths around the Waterfront. Pack proper sun protection regardless of season, the sun here is stronger than it feels, particularly at altitude on Table Mountain.
That’s everything I’ve got.
