Where to Stay & Eat in Seattle
Which neighbourhood fits your trip, and where the good, honestly priced food actually is.
Seattle’s neighbourhoods each have a distinct character, and the right base depends on what kind of trip you’re having. Here’s an honest breakdown of where to stay, and where to eat once you’re there.
Where to stay, by neighbourhood
Downtown & Pike Place
Pike Place Market, the waterfront and Seattle Center all within easy walking distance, the natural choice for a first trip focused on the main sights. It’s also the priciest part of the city, worth it for the convenience on a short stay.
Capitol Hill
A short light rail ride from downtown, Capitol Hill offers a properly strong, independent dining and bar scene, considerably more character than the tourist core. A proper choice if you’d rather balance sightseeing with good food and a livelier evening.
The University District
Home to the University of Washington, this neighbourhood runs noticeably cheaper than downtown while staying well connected by light rail. A properly lively, youthful energy and plenty of affordable eating options round out the appeal.
Fremont or Ballard
Fremont, the self-declared “Center of the Universe,” and Ballard, dense with craft breweries, both offer a properly different Seattle from the downtown core. A strong choice if you’d rather stay somewhere with real neighbourhood character, a bit further from the main sights but well worth the trade.
Where to eat
Pike Place Chowder is genuinely worth the queue for one proper bowl, and the market itself holds countless other stalls worth grazing through. Salmon dominates the local menu given the city’s proximity to the water, Elliott’s Oyster House on Pier 56 comes recommended specifically for sustainable seafood with a waterfront view.
For something more casual, Westlake’s food truck park offers widely good variety at a fraction of the cost, and Capitol Hill’s restaurant scene rewards a slower, more exploratory evening. The original Starbucks is worth a stop for the novelty alone, though the coffee itself isn’t necessarily the city’s best, plenty of independent roasters throughout Capitol Hill and Ballard do it better.
A note on getting around and safety
Seattle is genuinely one of the safer major US cities, low crime beyond the usual pickpocket risk in crowded tourist spots like Pike Place. Link light rail covers downtown, the airport and the University District efficiently, and downtown itself is compact enough to walk.
That’s everything I’ve got.
