Things to Do in Southwold
Prices, opening hours, best times to visit and the stuff nobody tells you, everything you need for a first trip to Southwold, England, plus one pigeon's opinions on all of it.
Southwold has a working lighthouse standing among the houses instead of out on some lonely headland, a brewery that's been going since the 17th century, and a pier with machines nobody else in the country has, including one that gently washes your money. This is the proper guide to things to do in Southwold, what things actually cost, when to go, and which bits are worth your time. Three main stops below, plus a quiz at the bottom to see if you were paying attention.
Southwold Lighthouse
I asked in the quiz where Southwold's lighthouse is unusually located, and it stands right among the town's houses rather than isolated on the coast exactly as the quiz hint described, visible from almost everywhere in Southwold. Built in 1890, 101 feet tall and painted brilliant white, it replaced an earlier wooden lighthouse on Gun Hill, originally lit by paraffin before converting to electricity in 1938. It's operated by Trinity House and open to the public on certain days, worth checking their site for current tour dates if you want to climb it.
Gun Hill, right in front of the lighthouse, holds a set of 18-pound cannons, thought to be over 400 years old, given to the town in 1746 by the Royal Armouries as protection against seaborne raids, last actually fired in 1842 to mark the Prince of Wales's birthday.

Adnams Brewery
The answer to the second quiz question: Southwold's beach huts, some of the most expensive in the country, sit in a town also known for Adnams, brewing here since the 17th century exactly as the quiz hint described. Their flagship beer, Ghost Ship, is recognised well beyond Suffolk, and the brewery has expanded over the years into wine, spirits and a genuinely well-regarded gin. Adnams owns every pub in Southwold, so working out where to drink is less a question of choice and more a question of atmosphere.
Brewery and distillery tours run regularly, ending in a proper tasting, and a separate distillery tour focuses specifically on their vodka, gin and whisky if beer isn't the draw.

Southwold Pier & the Under the Pier Show
I asked in the quiz what kind of unusual machines Southwold Pier is known for, created by a local inventor, and it's hand-built, coin-operated arcade machines, including one for gently "washing" your money exactly as the quiz hint described. Built by engineer Tim Hunkin, the Under the Pier Show includes genuinely bizarre creations like Whack-a-Banker, a housefly flight simulator called Flydrive, and a nuclear reactor game called My Nuke, unlike any arcade you'll find on another British pier.
Outside the show sits Hunkin's mechanical Water Clock, where every half hour a bathing couple squirt water at each other while small boys attempt, and fail, to aim into a toilet, a genuinely odd and beloved Southwold institution. The pier itself, rebuilt in 2001 after storm damage and originally opened in 1900, also has cafes, shops and an old-fashioned penny arcade.

Best time to visit Southwold
May to September gives the most reliable weather for the beach, the beach huts and the pier, and it's when Adnams' brewery tours run most regularly. The lighthouse, when open, and the pier's indoor arcade both work in any weather, so a wet or wintry visit doesn't rule out a good trip, it just shifts the balance indoors.
Getting around Southwold
Southwold's town centre, the lighthouse, Gun Hill, Adnams and the pier, is entirely walkable, everything sits within about 10-15 minutes of each other. Southwold has no train station, the nearest mainline stop is some distance away, so a car or bus connection is worth planning ahead, and parking can be tight on summer weekends.
