Things to Do in Salisbury

Prices, opening hours, best times to visit and the stuff nobody tells you, everything you need for a first trip to Salisbury, England, plus one pigeon's opinions on all of it.

Salisbury Cathedral has the tallest spire of any church in Britain, holds one of only four surviving original Magna Carta copies, and sits close enough to Stonehenge that both fit comfortably into a single day. This is the proper guide to things to do in Salisbury, what things actually cost, when to go, and which bits are worth the trip out to the stones. Three main stops below, plus a quiz at the bottom to see if you were paying attention.

01 / The document I asked about

Salisbury Cathedral & the Magna Carta

I asked in the quiz which 1215 document Salisbury Cathedral holds one of only four surviving original copies of, and it's the Magna Carta, sealed by King John at Runnymede, exactly as the quiz hint described, and widely considered the best-preserved of the four surviving copies anywhere in the world. It's displayed in the Chapter House, alongside some of the finest medieval sculpture and carved friezes in England, included as part of standard cathedral admission rather than a separate ticket.

The cathedral also holds the oldest working mechanical clock in the world, dating to the 14th century, still ticking away inside the building. Built between 1220 and 1320 in a single sustained construction burst, unusual for an English cathedral, it has a remarkable architectural unity most cathedrals, built and rebuilt over centuries, simply don't have.

Price Suggested donation £9 for adults, free for children; Tower Tour extra, around £15
Hours Generally 9am-5pm, check current times, especially Sundays

"I roosted on that spire once. Tallest perch in Britain, best view of the cathedral close, and I'd genuinely recommend the Tower Tour if you want a taste of the same view without wings."
02 / The height I asked about

Britain's Tallest Spire

The answer to the second quiz question: Salisbury Cathedral's spire reaches 123 metres, or 404 feet, the tallest church spire in the UK and has held that title since the 14th century exactly as the quiz hint described, an genuinely remarkable feat of medieval engineering given the tower beneath it was never designed to bear that much additional weight. The Tower Tour, climbing 332 steps in stages up to the base of the spire, takes you behind the scenes through the roof spaces and gives views over Salisbury from 223 feet up, considerably closer to the top than most cathedral tower tours manage.

The Cathedral Close surrounding the building is the largest and most complete in England, 80 acres of medieval and Georgian houses including Mompesson House, a National Trust property, worth a slow walk regardless of whether you go inside the cathedral itself.

Price Tower Tour around £15 in addition to cathedral admission, booking in advance recommended
03 / The monument I asked about

Stonehenge

I asked in the quiz which UNESCO World Heritage prehistoric monument lies just a few miles from Salisbury, and it's Stonehenge, its ring of standing stones dating back around 5,000 years exactly as the quiz hint described. Sitting only about eight miles from the cathedral and roughly a 20-minute drive, it's easily combined into the same day, and several tour operators run combined Salisbury Cathedral and Stonehenge trips if you'd rather not manage transport and timed entry tickets yourself.

Old Sarum, the original site of Salisbury's first cathedral and settlement before the Bishop relocated to the current riverside spot in 1218, is a separate, smaller Iron Age hillfort and ruined castle just north of the modern city, a good, quieter add-on if Stonehenge alone doesn't satisfy the prehistoric-and-medieval itch.

Price Stonehenge adult admission, check current English Heritage rates, book ahead for timed entry
Getting there About 8 miles / 20 minutes by car from Salisbury; combined bus tours also run

Best time to visit Salisbury

May to September gives the most reliable weather for the Cathedral Close and a Stonehenge visit, and it's when Tower Tours run their fullest schedule. The Cathedral itself works fine year-round, and Stonehenge, while more exposed, is open in any weather, so a wintry trip doesn't rule out seeing both in the same visit.

Getting around Salisbury

Salisbury's city centre and the Cathedral Close are compact and entirely walkable, under 10 minutes from the railway and bus stations. Stonehenge requires a car or an organised tour bus, it's not within walking distance and public transport options are limited, so booking a tour or arranging a hire car in advance is worth doing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Salisbury worth visiting?
Yes, particularly for the cathedral, home to Britain's tallest spire and the best-preserved of the four surviving Magna Carta copies, and its easy proximity to Stonehenge, both genuinely significant sights reachable in a single day.
How many days do you need in Salisbury?
A day covers the cathedral and a trip out to Stonehenge comfortably. Two days lets you add Old Sarum and a slower walk through the Cathedral Close without rushing.
Is Salisbury expensive?
Moderate. The cathedral runs on a suggested donation rather than a fixed fee; Stonehenge and the Tower Tour are the main paid extras.
What is Salisbury famous for?
Salisbury Cathedral, home to Britain's tallest church spire and one of the four surviving original 1215 Magna Carta copies; and its proximity to Stonehenge, just eight miles away.

That's everything I've got.
