Things to Do in Sheffield

Prices, opening hours, best times to visit and the stuff nobody tells you, everything you need for a first trip to Sheffield, England, plus one pigeon's opinions on all of it.

Sheffield built its whole reputation on steel, invented the rust-proof kind the world still uses today, and somehow ended up one of the greenest cities in the country in the process. This is the proper guide to things to do in Sheffield, what things actually cost, when to go, and which bits are worth your time. Four main stops below, plus a quiz at the bottom to see if you were paying attention.

01 / The product I asked about

Sheffield Steel & Kelham Island Museum

I asked in the quiz what Sheffield built its world reputation as a centre for producing, and it's steel, the term "Sheffield steel" became internationally recognised exactly as the quiz hint described, dating back to Benjamin Huntsman's invention of cast steel in 1742 and running through Henry Bessemer's mass-production converter in the 1850s. Kelham Island Museum, on a man-made island created in the 12th century to power a corn mill, tells the full story with working steam engines, reconstructed workshops, and demonstrations of traditional cutlery grinding and forging.

The museum sits in the historic industrial quarter, and a scatter of working craft studios, Portland Works among them, still make knives, scissors and silver by hand today, a genuine living continuation of the trade rather than just a museum piece.

"Stainless steel was invented here in 1913. I've rusted faster than that discovery took to matter, and I mean that with a certain professional respect."
02 / The trees I asked about

One of England's Greenest Cities

The answer to the second quiz question: Sheffield is often called one of the greenest cities in England thanks to its unusually high number of trees, reportedly more per person than almost anywhere else in Europe exactly as the quiz hint described. A third of the city actually sits within the Peak District National Park, and the combination of urban parks, wooded valleys and river corridors gives Sheffield a genuinely different character to most other industrial northern cities.

The Peak District itself is reachable within minutes from the city centre by tram or bus, making Sheffield one of the easiest UK cities to combine a proper day of hiking with an evening back in a genuine urban centre.

Price Free to explore the city's parks and green spaces
03 / The innovation I asked about

Harry Brearley & Stainless Steel

I asked in the quiz which stainless steel innovation, still used worldwide today, was invented in Sheffield in 1913, and it's stainless steel itself, discovered by Harry Brearley while trying to develop a better gun barrel material exactly as the quiz hint described. On 13 August 1913, Brearley created a steel alloy with roughly 12.8% chromium that simply wouldn't rust, a discovery that went on to remake cutlery, medical instruments and countless other industries worldwide, first forged into knives and forks at Portland Works right here in the city.

Brearley was one of eight siblings born into poverty near the Wicker, and Kelham Island Museum's exhibits on his life and discovery are a genuinely good way to understand just how significant, and how ordinary in origin, this piece of Sheffield history actually is.

04 / Culture beyond the steel

The Millennium Gallery & Winter Garden

The Millennium Gallery, free to enter, holds contemporary art, metalwork and design exhibitions alongside the city's own Ruskin Collection, works gathered by the Victorian critic John Ruskin specifically for Sheffield's working people. Right next door, the Winter Garden, one of the largest temperate glasshouses built in Europe in the last century, is also free, a genuinely striking, plant-filled space to walk through regardless of the weather outside.

Both sit close to the Crucible Theatre, home to the World Snooker Championship every spring, worth checking the calendar if you happen to be visiting during the tournament.

Best time to visit Sheffield

May to September gives the most reliable weather for exploring the Peak District edges and the city's parks, and it's when the Winter Garden and outdoor spaces are at their busiest and best. Kelham Island Museum and the Millennium Gallery both work fine year-round, so a wet or wintry visit doesn't rule out a good trip.

Getting around Sheffield

Sheffield's city centre, the Millennium Gallery, the Winter Garden and the Crucible Theatre, is compact and walkable. Kelham Island Museum sits a short walk or tram ride from the centre. The Peak District itself is reachable within 20-30 minutes by tram, bus or a short drive, one of Sheffield's genuine advantages over most other UK cities.
