Things to Do in Ludlow

Prices, opening hours, best times to visit and the stuff nobody tells you, everything you need for a first trip to Ludlow, England, plus one pigeon's opinions on all of it.

Ludlow once claimed more Michelin stars per head than anywhere outside London, ran the government of Wales and the border counties from its castle for centuries, and still has over 500 listed buildings lining its medieval streets. This is the proper guide to things to do in Ludlow, what things actually cost, when to go, and which bits are worth your time. Four main stops below, plus a quiz at the bottom to see if you were paying attention.

01 / The reputation I asked about

Ludlow's Food Scene & Food Festival

I asked in the quiz what national reputation Ludlow has built around food, and in the early 2000s it was widely reported to have more Michelin-starred restaurants per head of population than anywhere outside London, exactly as the quiz hint described. That exact concentration has shifted over the years, but the food culture remains genuinely strong, independent butchers, bakers and cheesemongers fill the market town streets, and the annual Ludlow Food Festival each September, now over 30 years running, brings around 200 producers into the castle grounds for three days of tastings and demonstrations, several led by Michelin-starred chefs.

The festival's Sausage Trail is a genuine local institution, around 1,000 people buy a voting form and wander the participating butchers tasting each shop's competition sausage before crowning a champion.

"This town has more Michelin stars per head than most of London. I still just eat chips, and honestly, I don't think either of us is missing out."
02 / The region I asked about

Ludlow Castle

The answer to the second quiz question: Ludlow Castle once served as the seat of government for the Council of the Marches, the body that administered most of Wales, Shropshire and the adjacent English counties, governing Wales and its border counties for centuries exactly as the quiz hint described. Founded around 1086 by Walter de Lacy, one of William the Conqueror's most powerful barons, it's one of the finest ruined castles in England, and its position on a sandstone ridge above the River Teme was chosen for military dominance as much as the view.

The castle still hosts major events across the year, the Ludlow Food Festival, a Spring Festival, and Shakespeare productions in summer, so its role as a genuine community hub has outlasted its original administrative purpose by centuries.

Price Adult admission around £10, family tickets around £28
Hours Seasonal, generally 10am-5pm mid-March to October, shorter hours off-season

03 / The period I asked about

Ludlow's Medieval & Tudor Town Centre

I asked in the quiz which period Ludlow's town centre is well known for, and it's medieval, with numerous Tudor examples as well, over 500 listed buildings giving the town a distinctly historic character, timber-framed buildings still lining the market square exactly as the quiz hint described. Broad Street, running down from the castle, is often cited as one of the most beautiful streets in England, and the Broadgate arch at its foot is a genuine surviving fragment of the town's original medieval walls.

St Laurence's Church, one of the largest parish churches in England, is worth the visit for its 18th-century Snetzler organ and one of the country's finest medieval stained glass windows, alongside the unusual carved misericords in the chancel.

Price Free to walk the town centre; St Laurence's Church entry free (donations welcome)
04 / Every week of the year

Ludlow Market

A genuine working market rather than a tourist reconstruction, trading every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday year-round, plus most Thursdays and a third-Sunday antiques and flea market, farm-fresh produce, artisanal crafts and local specialities right in the heart of town. It's held in the shadow of the castle and is one of the easiest, cheapest ways to get a genuine feel for Ludlow's food-and-craft identity beyond the festival calendar.

Price Free to browse
Hours Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat (most weeks), plus most Thursdays

Best time to visit Ludlow

May to September gives the most reliable weather for walking the town centre and exploring the castle grounds, and if food is the main draw, the September Food Festival is worth building a trip around specifically. St Laurence's Church and the town's shops and restaurants work fine year-round, and the Christmas Medieval Fayre gives Ludlow a genuinely different, festive character if you're visiting in winter.

Getting around Ludlow

Ludlow's town centre, the Castle, Broad Street, St Laurence's Church and the market, is compact and entirely walkable, everything sits within about 10 minutes of the centre. Ludlow railway station is a short walk from town, and the surrounding Shropshire Hills and border country are best explored by car if you're staying more than a day.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ludlow worth visiting?
Yes, particularly for food lovers, its reputation as one of England's top food towns is genuinely earned, and the combination of a well-preserved medieval castle and over 500 listed buildings gives it a rare, complete historic character.
How many days do you need in Ludlow?
A day covers the castle, Broad Street and the market comfortably. It also works well as a base for exploring the wider Shropshire Hills, Stokesay Castle and Ironbridge Gorge if staying longer.
Is Ludlow expensive?
Moderate. The castle is the main paid attraction; walking the town centre, St Laurence's Church and browsing the market all cost nothing, though the town's Michelin-level dining can push a meal budget up considerably if that's the draw.
What is Ludlow famous for?
Its food scene, once reportedly boasting more Michelin stars per head than anywhere outside London; Ludlow Castle, former seat of the Council of the Marches governing Wales and the border counties; and its well-preserved medieval and Tudor town centre.

That's everything I've got.
