Things to Do in Hadrian's Wall

Prices, opening hours, best times to visit and the stuff nobody tells you, everything you need for a first trip to Hadrian's Wall, England, plus one pigeon's opinions on all of it.

An emperor built a wall right across the width of the country to mark the edge of his empire, and nineteen centuries later you can still walk long stretches of it. This is the proper guide to things to do at Hadrian's Wall, what things actually cost, when to go, and which sites are worth the drive between them. Four main stops below, plus a quiz at the bottom to see if you were paying attention.

01 / The emperor I asked about

Hadrian's Wall itself

I asked in the quiz which Roman emperor ordered the wall's construction, and it's Hadrian, who visited Britain in AD 122 and ordered it built to mark the empire's northern frontier, a decision that still shapes the landscape of northern England today. It runs roughly 73 miles from the Solway Firth in the west to the mouth of the Tyne in the east, exactly the answer to the second quiz question, and walking the full Hadrian's Wall Path takes most people six to eight days at a comfortable pace.

You don't need to walk the whole thing to get a genuine sense of it, a single day is enough for a focused visit to two or three key sites, and the central section, around Housesteads, Chesters and Vindolanda, gives you the best concentration of well-preserved remains in the shortest distance.

Price Free to walk sections of the wall itself
Best time A single day covers two or three sites comfortably; a weekend covers the central section properly
"An emperor built a wall right across the country just to keep people out. I come and go as I please, obviously, but I do respect the ambition of trying to stop a pigeon with masonry."
02 / Britain's most complete Roman fort

Housesteads Roman Fort

Set on the dramatic Whin Sill escarpment, Housesteads is widely considered Britain's most complete Roman fort, one of 15 that once stood along the wall, garrisoned continuously from the 2nd century through to the 4th. You can wander the barrack blocks, the commandant's house, and the genuinely well-preserved communal Roman toilets, with an interactive museum covering objects once belonging to the soldiers stationed here.

It's an uphill walk from the car park to the fort and museum, worth knowing before you set off, and the views over Hadrian's Wall from the escarpment are some of the best along the whole route.

03 / The tablets I asked about

Vindolanda

I asked in the quiz which fort along the wall's route has yielded thousands of remarkably preserved wooden writing tablets, and the answer is Vindolanda, an active archaeological site with ongoing excavations that continue to turn up new finds most seasons. The tablets themselves include genuine personal letters, among them a birthday party invitation from around AD 100, one of the oldest surviving handwritten documents in British history and a genuinely rare, human glimpse into everyday Roman life on the frontier.

Vindolanda also holds the largest collection of Roman leather anywhere in the former empire, shoes, bags, and even a child's sock, alongside the writing tablets in its award-winning museum.

Price Adult tickets around £14.40 online; SAVER ticket covers both Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum
Hours Open most of the year, check seasonal times

04 / Start your Hadrian's Wall adventure here

The Roman Army Museum

Sitting near the village of Greenhead, right on the line of the wall, the Roman Army Museum is a genuinely good starting point for a Hadrian's Wall day, interactive displays and an award-winning film covering what everyday life was actually like for a Roman soldier stationed on the edge of the empire. It pairs naturally with Vindolanda, a short walk or seasonal bus ride away along the wall itself.

A combined SAVER ticket covers both sites and stays valid for 12 months, useful if you'd rather split your visit across two separate trips rather than rushing both in one day.

Best time to visit Hadrian's Wall

May to September gives the most reliable weather for walking sections of the wall and the uphill approach to Housesteads, and it's when all the main sites keep their fullest opening hours. Several sites, including Housesteads, are open year-round, so a shoulder-season visit is genuinely possible if you don't mind shorter hours and a chance of mud underfoot.

Getting around Hadrian's Wall

A car is by far the easiest way to combine several sites in a day, they're spread along roughly 20 miles of the wall's central section rather than clustered together. The seasonal AD122 bus service links the main sites along the wall if you're without a car, and walking the path itself between sites is a genuine option for anyone doing a multi-day trip.
