Athens for Couples
A 2,500-year-old temple that catches gold light like nowhere else, a rooftop bar built for lingering, and an island a short ferry ride away, the version of Athens that actually earns the word romantic.
Athens does plenty of the romantic work on its own, ancient stone that glows at sunset, rooftop bars built for slow evenings, and an island escape within easy reach. Here’s how to spend the time on the moments that are worth it.
Sunset over the Acropolis
A genuinely spectacular way to close out the day together, the Parthenon catches a proper golden light at sunset, best viewed from Lycabettus Hill, Filopappou Hill, or a Plaka rooftop bar with a floodlit view. A proper, unhurried way to spend a shared evening.
A Saronic Gulf island
A genuinely memorable day together, Hydra’s car-free harbour and Aegina’s ancient temple and pistachio groves both offer a proper escape from the city, a short ferry ride from Piraeus. A slow lunch by the water rewards the whole day trip.
The National Garden
A properly lovely, unhurried wander, this shaded park behind the Greek Parliament offers a genuine escape from the heat and crowds, with quiet paths and a small pond worth seeking out. A picnic here rewards a slow afternoon together.
Lycabettus Hill at dusk
A properly memorable way to spend an evening together, the funicular up Athens’s highest hill offers a panoramic view over the whole city, the Acropolis included, considerably quieter than the ground-level viewpoints. Worth timing for sunset.
Anafiotika
A properly quiet escape from the busier tourist routes, this tiny Cycladic-style village tucked into the Acropolis hillside rewards a slow wander together, whitewashed houses and bougainvillea considerably calmer than Plaka’s main streets.
Where to eat
A Plaka rooftop restaurant with a Parthenon view offers a proper special-occasion setting if the budget allows, several with striking views over the ancient sites. For something simpler, a candlelit taverna in Koukaki away from the busiest tourist streets makes for a low-pressure, still genuinely romantic evening together.
If a proposal is part of the plan
Sunset over the Acropolis comes up again and again for exactly this reason, free from Filopappou Hill and properly dramatic with the ancient stone as a backdrop. For something quieter, Anafiotika or a private moment in the National Garden both offer real privacy, and a Lycabettus Hill sunset remains the classic, more sweeping choice if that’s the goal.
That’s everything I’ve got.
