Best Time to Visit Kraków

Weather, crowds and one very good Christmas market, broken down so you can pick the trip you actually want.

There’s no single correct month to visit Kraków, it depends whether you’re chasing good weather, low prices, or thin crowds on the Main Square. Here’s how the year actually breaks down.

The short answer

May-June, or September

Late spring and early autumn bring Kraków’s most comfortable weather, mild without July and August’s peak crowds. Both windows still offer plenty of good weather for the Main Square and a Wieliczka day trip.

“Pack layers regardless of when you visit, genuinely. Kraków’s weather can shift fast, and the salt mine stays a constant cool temperature year-round, worth a jumper even in summer.”
Peak season

Summer (June-August): warmest, busiest, priciest

Summer brings Kraków’s warmest weather and its heaviest crowds, hotel prices climb accordingly and the Main Square gets properly busy. Book well ahead if travelling this window, particularly for Wawel Castle and the salt mine.

Low season

Winter (November-February): cheapest, quietest, coldest

Winter brings Kraków’s lowest hotel prices and thinnest crowds, alongside cold, often snowy weather. December brings a genuinely festive counterpoint though, the Christmas market on the Main Square is widely considered one of the best in Europe.

Month by month, the short version

November-February: coldest, cheapest, quietest, festive in December.
March-April: shoulder season begins, mild and increasingly busy.
May-June: a genuine sweet spot, warm without peak summer’s crowds.
July-August: hottest and busiest, book ahead for everything.
September: the other best window, mild, thinning crowds.
October: cooling down, still a reasonable window with autumn colour.

Events worth timing around

Kraków’s Christmas market, running from late November through December, is genuinely worth the trip on its own if festive atmosphere is what you’re after, wooden stalls filling the Main Square with mulled wine and traditional crafts. The Christmas Crib Competition each December and the Kraków Film Music Festival each spring add a proper cultural counterpoint too.

That’s everything I’ve got.
