Best Time to Visit Cape Town
A Mediterranean-style climate flipped to the Southern Hemisphere calendar, broken down so you can pick the trip you actually want.
Cape Town’s seasons run opposite to the Northern Hemisphere, summer falls in December through February, so the calendar takes a moment to adjust to. Here’s how the year actually breaks down.
March-May, or September-November
Autumn and spring bring Cape Town’s most reliable combination of good weather, thinner crowds and lower prices than the peak summer months. Both windows offer plenty of clear days for Table Mountain without the December rush.
Summer (December-February): warmest, busiest, priciest
South African summer brings Cape Town’s warmest, driest weather and its heaviest crowds, hotel prices climb accordingly, particularly around Christmas and New Year. Book well ahead if travelling this window.
Winter (June-August): coolest, wettest, cheapest
Winter brings Cape Town’s lowest hotel prices and thinnest crowds, alongside genuinely frequent rain and cooler temperatures. Table Mountain and the Winelands both work well regardless, and the rain rarely lasts all day.
Month by month, the short version
June-August: coolest, wettest, cheapest, thinnest crowds.
September-October: shoulder season begins, wildflowers bloom.
November: a genuine sweet spot, warming up, still reasonable prices.
December-February: warmest, driest, busiest, book ahead.
March-April: the other best window, mild and thinning crowds.
May: cooling down, rain returning, still a reasonable time to visit.
Events worth timing around
The Cape Town International Jazz Festival each spring is genuinely worth timing a visit around if live music appeals, drawing performers from across the continent and beyond. The Cape Town Carnival each March and the Two Oceans Marathon each Easter add a proper local counterpoint to the city’s usual pace too.
That’s everything I’ve got.
