Things to Do in Kigali
Prices, opening hours, best times to visit and the stuff nobody tells you, everything you need for a first trip to Kigali, Rwanda, plus one pigeon's opinions on all of it.
Right, Kigali. Genuinely spotless streets, hills in every direction, a memorial that's essential rather than optional viewing, a city that's rebuilt itself with real, deliberate care and now serves as the gateway to some of the world's last mountain gorillas. This is the proper, no-nonsense guide to things to do in Kigali: what things actually cost, when to go, what to skip, and which bits deserve real time and respect. Four main stops below, plus a quiz elsewhere on this site to see if you were paying attention.
Kigali Genocide Memorial
Kigali is home to a major memorial commemorating the 1994 genocide, a genuinely essential, sobering stop for understanding modern Rwanda's history and recovery, the memorial serves as both a place of remembrance, over 250,000 victims are buried here, and an educational centre covering the events leading up to and during the genocide with real, careful depth.
It's a heavy, essential visit, worth allowing genuine time and emotional space, this is not something to rush through, and worth understanding as context for everything else you'll see and experience in Rwanda, a country that has undertaken a truly remarkable process of recovery and reconciliation since.

Umuganda & Kigali's Cleanliness
Kigali is frequently praised as one of the cleanest cities in Africa, partly due to a monthly community effort called Umuganda, a nationwide mandatory community service morning held on the last Saturday of each month, residents across the country participate in cleaning and community improvement projects, a genuinely significant piece of Rwanda's post-genocide rebuilding philosophy, civic participation and collective responsibility taken seriously as national policy.
If your visit lines up with the last Saturday of the month, most businesses close during Umuganda hours (roughly 8am to 11am), worth planning around this rather than being caught out, and it's genuinely worth witnessing, even as an observer, this level of organised civic participation.

Gorilla Trekking Logistics
Kigali serves as a common gateway for travellers heading to see mountain gorillas in nearby national parks, Volcanoes National Park, a few hours away, is one of the last strongholds of this endangered species, a genuinely extraordinary wildlife experience and a major reason many visitors come to Rwanda specifically. Gorilla trekking permits are expensive and limited, book well ahead, this is a properly conservation-funded, carefully managed experience rather than a casual add-on.
Kigali is where most visitors arrange final logistics, gear, guides, and transport, before heading to Volcanoes National Park, worth building at least a day or two in the city both before and after the trek itself.
Getting there Volcanoes National Park about 2.5–3 hours from Kigali
Best time Book permits months ahead, they sell out
Kigali's Local Culture
Beyond the memorial and gorilla trekking, Kigali has a genuinely growing contemporary art and cafe scene, Inema Arts Center, a working artist collective and gallery, is worth a visit for a lighter, forward-looking counterpoint to the memorial, a good sense of the country's creative energy and optimism.
Kigali's coffee culture is also genuinely worth engaging with, Rwanda produces excellent coffee, and several cafes in the city serve it with real care, worth a proper sit-down coffee break between other sightseeing.

Best time to visit Kigali
June through September and December through February are the drier windows and genuinely the more comfortable times for the amount of walking this list involves and for gorilla trekking specifically.
The wet seasons bring heavier rain, workable for the city itself, though gorilla trekking becomes considerably more physically demanding in muddy conditions, worth planning around the drier months if trekking is a priority.
Getting around Kigali
Moto-taxis (motorcycle taxis) are the fastest, cheapest way to get around Kigali, genuinely well-regulated with helmets provided, safer than similar services in many other cities. Regular taxis are the steadier alternative for those less comfortable on a motorbike.
