Things to Do in Kampala

Prices, opening hours, best times to visit and the stuff nobody tells you, everything you need for a first trip to Kampala, Uganda, plus one pigeon's opinions on all of it.

Right, Kampala. Built across seven hills, close enough to the source of the Nile to make a decent day trip of it, a city with genuine royal history still alive alongside its modern role as Uganda's capital. This is the proper, no-nonsense guide to things to do in Kampala: what things actually cost, when to go, what to skip, and which bits are worth the day trip. Five main stops below, plus a quiz elsewhere on this site to see if you were paying attention.

01 / Each hill historically held its own significance

Kampala's Seven Hills

Kampala is traditionally described as being built across seven hills, each hill historically held its own significance, from royal palaces to religious sites, a genuinely distinctive layout that shapes how the city looks and feels, sweeping views opening up unexpectedly as you move between neighbourhoods sitting at different elevations.

Namirembe Hill and Rubaga Hill, each home to major cathedrals, and Kasubi Hill, home to the royal tombs, are among the most significant, worth understanding this hill-by-hill structure as you plan which specific sites to prioritise.

02 / Where the river begins its long journey north

Source of the Nile (Jinja) Day Trip

Kampala sits close to the source of the Nile, Jinja, a short drive away, marks the point where the river begins its long journey north, a genuinely significant geographical and historical site, the Nile's full course stretches thousands of kilometres from here all the way to Egypt and the Mediterranean.

Beyond viewing the source itself, Jinja has become a genuine hub for white-water rafting and other adventure activities on the upper Nile, worth building a full day trip around if that interests you, alongside the more contemplative experience of simply seeing where this famous river actually begins.

Price Source of the Nile viewing typically 10,000–20,000 UGX; white-water rafting trips typically $100–150
Getting there About 1.5–2 hours from Kampala by car
03 / A traditional monarchy, still alongside the modern government

Kasubi Tombs & the Buganda Kingdom

Kampala served as the capital of the historic Buganda Kingdom, whose king, called the Kabaka, still holds a ceremonial role today, a traditional monarchy that continues to exist alongside the modern Ugandan government, a genuinely rare, living arrangement worth understanding, the Kabaka remains a significant cultural figure even without formal political power.

The Kasubi Tombs, burial site of several Buganda kings and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, were tragically damaged by fire in 2010 but have been undergoing restoration, worth checking current visitor access and the state of reconstruction before planning a visit.

Price Entry typically 20,000–30,000 UGX, check current status given ongoing restoration

04 / Genuinely striking, and welcoming to all faiths

Uganda Martyrs Shrine, Namugongo

A significant Christian pilgrimage site commemorating Ugandan converts executed for their faith in the late 19th century, a genuinely important site in East African religious history, drawing pilgrims from across the region each June for a major annual commemoration.

It's a striking, well-maintained shrine complex, worth visiting for the history and architecture even outside the main pilgrimage dates, a good half-day trip from central Kampala.

05 / A lively local market experience

Owino Market

One of the largest, most vibrant markets in East Africa, textiles, produce, and everyday goods, a genuinely chaotic, immersive experience and one of the better ways to see Kampala functioning as it actually does day to day, well beyond the more formal, historical sites elsewhere on this list.

It's a busy, crowded market, keep valuables secure and go with a bit of patience, the energy and scale here are genuinely worth experiencing regardless.

Best time to visit Kampala

June through August and December through February are the drier windows and genuinely the more comfortable times for the amount of walking (across those seven hills) and day-tripping this list involves.

The wet seasons (roughly March-May and September-November) bring heavier, more frequent rain, still workable if you plan around it, and note Kampala's equatorial position means temperatures stay fairly consistent year-round regardless of season.

Getting around Kampala

Boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis) are the fastest, most common way to get around Kampala's genuinely challenging traffic, though they carry real safety risk, worth weighing carefully. Taxis (regular cars) are the steadier, if slower, alternative for visitors less comfortable with motorbikes.
