Victoria with Kids
A hands-on bug zoo where kids can hold Canada’s largest ant colony, a boat trip with a real chance of spotting orcas in the wild, and a museum with totem poles and dinosaur fossils, the version of Victoria built for families.
Victoria works well with kids in tow, several of its best sights are properly hands-on or dramatic by design, and the compact harbour district makes moving between them easy. Here’s how I’d spend a family day here.
Victoria Bug Zoo
A properly interactive mini zoo, home to over 50 species including giant walking sticks, glow-in-the-dark scorpions and Canada’s largest ant colony. Properly hands-on, tour guides let kids hold the friendlier bugs, worth an hour or so, a block from the Fairmont Empress.
A whale watching tour
A properly thrilling outing for kids, spotting orcas or grey whales in the Salish Sea offers a genuine adventure, most operators offer a sighting guarantee. A good, active way to combine wildlife with time on the water.
Royal BC Museum
A properly engaging museum, its natural and human history galleries include totem poles, dinosaur fossils and an IMAX theatre. A genuine indoor option if the weather turns, worth two to four hours.
Butchart Gardens’ Rose Carousel
A properly fun stop for kids, Butchart Gardens’ carousel and open lawns offer a break from garden-touring, a good way to keep younger visitors engaged. A slow browse through the themed gardens rewards patience too.
Beacon Hill Park
A proper free spot for kids, this waterfront park has a petting zoo, a playground and open lawns for running around. Free, unhurried, and an easy way to burn off energy between the bigger sights.
Where to eat with kids
Fish and chips is genuinely an easy, reliable win with kids, casual and quick with a menu covering most tastes. A Chinatown café works well for families too, particularly for a quick, affordable lunch.
A few practical notes
Downtown Victoria is genuinely stroller-friendly, mostly flat, paved streets throughout. Pack proper layers for the water, whale watching boats can be considerably cooler and windier than the temperature on land suggests.
That’s everything I’ve got.
