Belfast with Kids

A science centre with 250 hands-on exhibits, a real ship kids can walk right through, and a rope bridge over a genuinely dizzying drop, the version of Belfast built for families.

Belfast works well with kids in tow, several of its best sights are hands-on or genuinely thrilling by design, and the compact centre means less time trudging between them. Here’s how I’d spend a family day here.

The hands-on one

W5

A properly interactive science and discovery centre in the Odyssey complex, over 250 hands-on exhibits across eight zones, plus a multistorey climbing experience and daily live science shows. Built for touching everything, worth a full morning or afternoon.

“Book W5 tickets ahead, properly. Pre-booking is essential, and turning up without a reservation risks disappointment on a busy day.”
The classic

Titanic Belfast and SS Nomadic

More hands-on than the name might suggest, interactive galleries let kids experience the shipyard sounds and scale of construction. The SS Nomadic, the last surviving White Star Line vessel nearby, lets kids walk the actual decks of a ship from the same era.

Something thrilling

Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge

A properly memorable day trip from Belfast, this rope bridge swings 30 metres above the sea to a small island, a properly exciting challenge for kids old enough to handle the height. The Giant’s Causeway, a short drive further along the coast, rounds out the day.

The free one

Botanic Gardens and the Ulster Museum

A proper green space near Queen’s University, Botanic Gardens has open lawns and a Victorian glasshouse worth a wander. The Ulster Museum next door offers free entry and a properly engaging natural history and dinosaur collection.

Something active

The Odyssey and Maritime Mile

Beyond W5, the Odyssey complex has an ice rink and other family activities, and the Maritime Mile walking route along the harbour offers plenty of space to run around between sights.

Where to eat with kids

An Ulster fry is genuinely a fun, filling option for a family breakfast, most casual local cafés handle a fidgety kid at the table without a fuss. St George’s Market’s food stalls work well for a family lunch on market days too, plenty of variety in one spot.

A note on the coast trip

The Giant’s Causeway coast is properly worth the day trip with kids, but budget carefully, it’s roughly an hour and a half’s drive each way. An organised coach tour takes the logistics off your hands if driving isn’t appealing.

That’s everything I’ve got.
