Where to Stay & Eat in Singapore
Which neighbourhood fits your trip, and where the good, honestly priced food actually is.
Singapore’s neighbourhoods each have a distinct character, modern and central in one direction, heritage and local in the other. Here’s an honest breakdown of where to stay, and where to eat once you’re there.
Where to stay, by neighbourhood
Marina Bay
Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands and the waterfront all within easy walking distance, the natural choice for a first trip focused on the modern icons. It’s also the priciest part of the city, worth it for the convenience on a short stay.
Chinatown
A properly atmospheric heritage district, Chinatown offers cheaper accommodation and a strong hawker food scene, temples and shophouses lining the streets. A short MRT ride from Marina Bay, and considerably better value too.
Little India
A properly vibrant, colourful district, Little India runs noticeably cheaper than Marina Bay while offering a strong, independent food scene of its own. A short MRT ride to the central sights.
Kampong Glam
A properly stylish heritage district centred on the Sultan Mosque, Kampong Glam offers boutique hotels and a strong independent café scene. A good choice if you’d rather balance sightseeing with a more design-focused evening scene.
Where to eat
Hawker food is genuinely essential rather than optional, a proper hawker centre offers considerably better value and often better food than a sit-down restaurant near Marina Bay. Maxwell Food Centre and Chinatown Complex remain some of the best cheap eats destinations in the city, several stalls holding Michelin recognition.
Singapore’s fine dining scene is worth knowing about too, several Michelin-starred restaurants sit alongside the hawker stalls in price range surprisingly often. Little India and Kampong Glam both hold a genuinely strong, more affordable dining scene beyond the tourist-heavy waterfront.
A note on getting around and safety
Singapore is genuinely one of the safest cities in the world for visitors, low crime across nearly every neighbourhood. The MRT covers the whole city efficiently, considerably better than relying on taxis given traffic and cost.
That’s everything I’ve got.
