Solo Travel in Nashville

A city built around live music is a genuinely easy place to be alone in, nobody blinks at a solo seat at the bar of a honky-tonk, and the whole point of the room is to listen anyway.

Nashville rewards a solo trip better than most cities. The bars are built around watching a band, not talking over one, and the whole culture runs on strangers striking up conversation between sets. Here’s how to spend the time well on your own.

The easy solo morning

Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum

A genuinely absorbing solo museum visit, no need to match anyone else’s pace through the exhibits on your own schedule. Budget more time than you’d expect, it’s considerably bigger than it looks from outside.

“Go on a weekday morning if you can. The exhibits reward slow reading, and a quiet museum on your own terms is one of solo travel’s actual advantages.”
The whole point of the city

A honky-tonk crawl on Broadway

Properly built for solo visitors, most honky-tonks have zero cover charge and a bar-facing crowd who came to watch the band, not to be talked at. Moving between two or three venues over an evening is a normal, easy way to spend a solo night out here.

The one for actual songwriters

A round at the Bluebird Cafe

A legendary, intimate songwriter’s venue where some of country music’s biggest hits were first performed. Book well ahead, seats are limited and it’s a properly different, quieter atmosphere to Broadway, worth the advance planning for a solo evening.

The neighbourhood wander

East Nashville on foot

A properly walkable, low-pressure way to spend a solo afternoon, coffee shops, street art and independent boutiques across the river from downtown. A different pace to the tourist-heavy stretch of Broadway.

The guided option

A walking or history tour

A properly easy way to meet other travellers and get local context in one go, downtown walking tours and food tours both run regularly and welcome solo bookings without a second thought. Worth it early in the trip to get orientated before exploring further alone.

Where to eat alone

Prince’s Hot Chicken and Hattie B’s both work well solo, counter or bar seating and a menu built for one. Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint’s long communal picnic tables make eating alone easy too, nobody thinks twice about a single diner at a barbecue joint.

A note on safety

Nashville is genuinely safe for solo visitors in the main tourist areas, low crime beyond the usual pickpocket risk in a crowded spot like Broadway at night. Downtown is walkable after dark along the main strip, and a rideshare covers East Nashville and the outer neighbourhoods efficiently if you’re heading back late.

That’s everything I’ve got.
