Things to Do in Belize City

Prices, opening hours, best times to visit and the stuff nobody tells you, everything you need for a first trip to Belize City, Belize, plus one pigeon's opinions on all of it.

Right, Belize City. Gateway to the reef, Caribbean and Central American cultures both visible on the same street, and a properly useful base even though most of the country's best-known attractions sit a boat ride or bus journey away. This is the proper, no-nonsense guide to things to do in Belize City: what things actually cost, when to go, what to skip, and which bits are worth the water taxi fare. Six main stops below, plus a quiz elsewhere on this site to see if you were paying attention.

01 / Second-largest barrier reef system in the world

Belize Barrier Reef Day Trips

Belize City serves as the main gateway to the Belize Barrier Reef, part of the second-largest barrier reef system in the world, only the Great Barrier Reef in Australia is larger, making this a properly significant marine system in its own right. Snorkelling and diving trips run daily from the city, the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and the Blue Hole (a famous giant marine sinkhole) are the two standout destinations for a day trip.

The Blue Hole specifically is a full-day trip and better suited to certified divers, snorkelling trips to Hol Chan and nearby Shark Ray Alley are more accessible for a wider range of visitors and well worth it for the marine life alone, nurse sharks and stingrays included.

Price Snorkelling day trips typically $80–150; Blue Hole diving trips $250–300
Best time Year-round, though visibility is best April through June
Getting there Boats depart from the Belize City tourist terminal
02 / A legacy of British colonial rule, unlike its neighbours

Belize's English-Speaking Identity

Belize is unusual in Central America for having English as its official language, a legacy of British colonial rule, setting it apart linguistically from all its Spanish-speaking neighbours, a distinctive part of the country's identity that shapes everything from street signs to the mix of Creole, Garifuna, Maya, and Mestizo cultures visible in Belize City itself.

Walking the old colonial streets around the Swing Bridge, one of the few surviving manually operated swing bridges in the world, gives a real sense of this layered history, wooden colonial buildings alongside the everyday bustle of a working Central American port city.

Price Free to walk
Address Central Belize City, around the Swing Bridge
03 / The old prison, now a proper museum

Museum of Belize

Housed in a former colonial-era prison, a well-curated museum covering Belize's Maya heritage, colonial history, and path to independence, including a notable stamp collection and Maya artefacts recovered from sites across the country. A good grounding stop before heading further afield to any of Belize's Maya ruins.

It's compact, an hour or so covers it properly, and it's one of the better indoor options if a rainy day interrupts reef or jungle plans.

Price Around $5 for foreign visitors
Hours Mon–Fri, check current times
Address Gabourel Lane, Belize City
04 / Why the capital isn't here anymore

Belize City's Hurricane History

Belize City was replaced as the national capital after a devastating hurricane, with the government moving to the purpose-built inland city of Belmopan specifically to avoid future coastal hurricane damage, a rare example of a country relocating its entire capital in direct response to a single natural disaster. Belize City remains the country's largest city and commercial hub despite losing its capital status.

St John's Cathedral, the oldest Anglican cathedral in Central America, survived the storms that reshaped the city and is worth a visit for both its history and its properly peaceful interior, a contrast to the busier streets outside.

Price Free to visit the cathedral
Address Albert Street, Belize City
05 / Manatees, up close and properly gentle

Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary

A protected marine sanctuary a short boat ride from Belize City, home to a resident population of manatees, gentle, slow-moving marine mammals that come remarkably close to snorkelling boats here. It's a calmer, more family-friendly outing than the deeper reef dives further out.

Tours typically combine manatee watching with snorkelling at a nearby reef site, a good half-day option if a full-day reef trip doesn't suit your schedule.

Price Typically $70–100 per person for a half-day tour
Best time Morning tours generally offer calmer water and better manatee sightings
06 / A jungle day trip, without leaving the mainland

Community Baboon Sanctuary

About 45 minutes from Belize City, a community-run conservation project protecting black howler monkeys (locally called 'baboons', despite not actually being baboons), loud and easy to spot from the walking trails through the surrounding forest. A good contrast to the reef-focused day trips, and a way to see Belize's jungle side without committing to a longer inland trip.

Local guides, drawn from the surrounding villages that support the sanctuary, add real context on the conservation programme and the monkeys' behaviour.

Price Around $10–15 entry, guided walks included
Getting there About 45 minutes from Belize City by car
Best time Morning, when the howler monkeys are most vocal and active

Best time to visit Belize City

December through April is the dry season and the best window, comfortable temperatures and calmer seas for reef trips, without the hurricane risk that shapes the rest of the year's travel planning here.

Hurricane season runs roughly June through November, worth checking forecasts closely if travelling during these months, and note that this history is precisely why Belize's own capital moved inland to Belmopan.

Getting around Belize City

Belize City's compact centre is walkable, though many visitors use it primarily as a jumping-off point rather than a base for extended time. Water taxis are the practical way to reach the reef, cayes, and Swallow Caye sanctuary; a rental car or organised tour covers inland trips like the Community Baboon Sanctuary.
