Things to Do in Ragusa

Prices, opening hours, best times to visit and the stuff nobody tells you, everything you need for a first trip to Ragusa, Sicily, plus one pigeon's opinions on all of it.

Right, Ragusa. Split in two by a gorge, rebuilt twice over, complicated place, this one, a Sicilian baroque town split across a dramatic ravine, reconstructed after a devastating 17th-century earthquake, and now a magnet for fans of a certain long-running Italian detective show. This is the proper, no-nonsense guide to things to do in Ragusa: what things actually cost, when to go, what to skip, and which bits are worth the climb. Three main stops below, plus a quiz elsewhere on this site to see if you were paying attention.

01 / Sturdy shoes are worth the investment here

The Two Halves of Ragusa

Ragusa is unusually divided into two distinct halves, separated by a deep gorge, worth knowing this before you plan your day, this isn't a small detour, it's a proper climb between the two sections, sturdy shoes are worth the investment.

Ragusa Ibla, the older, more atmospheric half, is where most of the baroque architecture and the best restaurants are concentrated, worth spending the bulk of your time there, with the upper town a shorter, complementary visit rather than an equal split.

Price Free to walk between the two halves
Best time Morning, before the heat makes the stairs considerably less pleasant
Address Ragusa Ibla and the upper town, Ragusa
"Properly tiring, those stairs, no other word for it. Worth pacing yourself if you're doing both halves in one day."
02 / The Duomo di San Giorgio anchors Ragusa Ibla's rebuilt centre

Ragusa's Baroque Rebuild

Like Noto, Ragusa was largely rebuilt in baroque style following a devastating 1693 earthquake, the earthquake destroyed much of the region's older architecture, and the rebuild that followed produced one of the most concentrated collections of baroque buildings anywhere in Italy.

The Duomo di San Giorgio, with its striking facade and dome, is the centrepiece of Ragusa Ibla's rebuilt architecture, worth allowing proper time to appreciate both the church itself and the sweeping staircase leading up to it.

Price Free to enter the Duomo
Hours Daily, roughly 9am–7pm, shorter on Sundays for tourist visits
Address Duomo di San Giorgio, Ragusa Ibla
03 / Several spots around town were used for the fictional town of Vigata

Inspector Montalbano Filming Locations

Ragusa has gained international attention in recent years as a filming location for the popular Italian detective television series Inspector Montalbano, several spots around Ragusa Ibla and the surrounding region were used for the fictional town of Vigata, worth a self-guided walk if you're familiar with the series.

Even without knowing the show, the locations chosen for filming happen to be some of the most photogenic corners of the old town anyway, worth exploring regardless of your familiarity with the source material.

Price Free to explore independently; guided tours typically €20–30
Best time Any time; morning light suits the older buildings well

Best time to visit Ragusa

April through June and September through October give the most comfortable weather for the amount of walking and stair-climbing this list involves, mild without summer's intense heat.

Summer brings serious heat, particularly demanding given the stairs between the two halves of town, worth avoiding July and August if possible, or planning sightseeing for early morning if you do visit then.

Getting around Ragusa

Ragusa Ibla and the upper town are walkable, though the stairs and hills between them require sturdy footwear and a reasonable level of fitness. A local bus connects the two halves for those who'd rather skip the climb.
