Things to Do in Bilbao
Prices, opening hours, best times to visit and the stuff nobody tells you, everything you need for a first trip to Bilbao, Spain, plus one pigeon's opinions on all of it.
Right, Bilbao. Titanium and pintxos ahead, an odd combination, works somehow. Off the well-trodden path for most first-time Spain visitors, and properly better for it. This is the proper, no-nonsense guide to things to do in Bilbao: what things actually cost, when to go, what to skip, and which bits are worth the bar crawl. Six main stops below, plus a quiz elsewhere on this site to see if you were paying attention.
The Guggenheim Bilbao
The titanium-clad museum, opened in 1997, transformed Bilbao's reputation almost overnight, shiny curved titanium panels, like a spaceship crash-landed by the river, and reflects the sun straight into passing pigeons' eyes most mornings, honestly. Designed by Frank Gehry, it's credited with kickstarting a whole wave of cities using ambitious architecture to reposition themselves internationally, the so-called 'Bilbao effect'.
The collection inside is properly strong, contemporary and modern art, with rotating major exhibitions alongside permanent installations, including Jeff Koons' giant flower-covered 'Puppy' sculpture guarding the entrance. Even skipping the interior, walking around the building's exterior along the river is free and worth doing.
Hours Daily, roughly 10am–7pm, closed some Mondays
Address Abandoibarra Etorb. 2, Bilbao

Basque Culture & Casco Viejo
Bilbao sits in the Basque Country, a distinct region of northern Spain known for its own language and strong regional identity, Basque is one of the oldest languages in Europe, related to nothing else nearby, a linguistic isolate that predates the arrival of Indo-European languages to the region entirely. Casco Viejo, Bilbao's old town, is the best place to feel this identity directly, narrow streets, the Gothic Santiago Cathedral, and the Siete Calles (Seven Streets) forming the original medieval core of the city.
It's a properly lively neighbourhood, particularly in the evening, when the pintxos bars fill up and the streets take on a proper local energy rather than a tourist one.
Best time Evening, for the full pintxos bar atmosphere
Address Casco Viejo, central Bilbao
Pintxos Bar-Hopping
A small, bite-sized snack, typically served on bread with a toothpick, pintxos are a Basque speciality found all over Bilbao's bars, tapas is the general Spanish word, pintxos is the specifically Basque version, and locals are properly particular about the distinction, worth respecting that if you want to fit in. The classic way to eat here is bar-hopping, one or two pintxos and a small glass of wine or txakoli (local sparkling white wine) per stop, moving on before you've settled in properly.
Calle Licenciado Poza and the streets around Plaza Nueva in Casco Viejo are the two best areas for this, dozens of bars within a short walk of each other, each with their own specialities laid out along the counter.
Best time Evening, particularly Thursday through Saturday
Address Calle Licenciado Poza and Casco Viejo
The Nervion Riverside & Zubizuri Bridge
Bilbao's riverfront has been properly transformed over the past few decades, from industrial decline to a landscaped walkway connecting the old town to the Guggenheim and the newer business district. The Zubizuri Bridge, a striking curved white pedestrian bridge designed by Santiago Calatrava, is the standout piece of this modern riverside architecture, worth crossing at least once during your visit.
It's free, flat, and one of the more pleasant ways to see how the city has reinvented itself, old industrial cranes preserved as monuments alongside properly cutting-edge new architecture.
Best time Any time; evening for the illuminated Guggenheim and bridge
Bilbao Fine Arts Museum
Considerably less famous than the Guggenheim but properly excellent in its own right, a strong collection of Spanish and Basque art spanning medieval to contemporary work, including pieces by Goya, El Greco, and prominent Basque artists less well known outside the region. It's a good, quieter counterpoint to the Guggenheim's more high-profile contemporary focus.
It sits right on the edge of Doña Casilda Park, worth combining a visit with a walk through the park's gardens and small lake.
Hours Tue–Sun, roughly 10am–8pm, closed Mondays
Address Museo Plaza 2, Bilbao
Mercado de la Ribera
One of the largest covered markets in Europe, right on the riverbank in Casco Viejo, fresh produce, seafood, and a properly good pintxos and tapas bar scene on the upper floor, worth treating as a meal destination rather than just a market to browse through.
It's a good lunch option between sightseeing stops, quality holds up well and prices stay reasonable compared to more tourist-oriented restaurants elsewhere in the old town.
Hours Mon–Sat, roughly 8am–3pm, some stalls open later
Address Calle de la Ribera, Casco Viejo
Best time to visit Bilbao
May through September gives the most comfortable weather for the riverside walks and pintxos bar-hopping this list involves, though Bilbao's Basque coast climate stays noticeably milder and rainier than southern Spain year-round.
The Guggenheim and Casco Viejo's pintxos bars work well regardless of season, worth visiting even outside peak summer if you don't mind packing for rain.
Getting around Bilbao
Bilbao's metro, designed in part by Norman Foster, is clean, cheap, and covers the city well. Casco Viejo, the riverside, and the Guggenheim are all within a comfortable walking distance of each other along the river, one of the more walkable Spanish cities for a first visit.
