Things to Do in Cairns

Prices, opening hours, best times to visit and the stuff nobody tells you, everything you need for a first trip to Cairns, Australia, plus one pigeon's opinions on all of it.

Right, Cairns. Gateway to the reef, rainforest right behind the city, both within a short drive of each other, a proper tropical outlier compared to the rest of Australia. This is the proper, no-nonsense guide to things to do in Cairns: what things actually cost, when to go, what to skip, and which bits are worth the boat trip. Six main stops below, plus a quiz elsewhere on this site to see if you were paying attention.

01 / The reason most people fly all this way

Great Barrier Reef Day Trips

Cairns serves as the main gateway city for visiting the Great Barrier Reef, the massive coral reef system, boats depart daily from the city's marina for day trips to the reef's outer edges, snorkelling and diving trips ranging from large catamaran tours to smaller, more personalised boats. The outer reef, further from shore, generally offers better coral condition and visibility than the closer sections, worth the extra travel time if you're serious about the experience.

Book with an operator that properly prioritises reef conservation and sustainable practices, the reef faces real, ongoing environmental pressure, and choosing responsibly matters more here than at most destinations.

Price Day trips typically AUD 200–280 including snorkel gear and lunch
Best time Year-round, though visibility is generally best April through November
Getting there Boats depart from Cairns Marina
02 / Older than many flowering plant species

Daintree Rainforest

Near Cairns lies the Daintree, one of the oldest surviving tropical rainforests in the world, believed to be over 180 million years old, older than many flowering plant species, a living link to an ancient period of the planet's ecological history. Boardwalks and guided tours through the forest reveal unique flora and fauna, including species found nowhere else, and the Daintree River cruise offers a good chance of spotting saltwater crocodiles in their natural habitat.

It's about 2 hours from Cairns, worth a full day trip, combining the rainforest with Cape Tribulation, where the rainforest meets the reef, two UNESCO World Heritage sites touching each other, a rare thing anywhere in the world.

Price Guided day tours typically AUD 150–220
Getting there About 2 hours from Cairns by car or organised tour
Best time Morning departure for a full day
03 / A different side of Australia

Cairns' Tropical Climate

Cairns' tropical far north Queensland location gives it a distinctly different climate from the temperate south, a proper humid, tropical climate that stands in sharp contrast to much of the rest of the country, worth planning around given how different it is from the Sydney or Melbourne weather most visitors expect from Australia. The wet season (roughly November through April) brings heavy, dramatic tropical downpours, while the dry season offers more consistently comfortable conditions for reef trips and rainforest walks.

Humidity here is significant year-round, pack accordingly, and don't be surprised if the pace of the city itself feels noticeably more relaxed than further south, the tropical climate shapes daily life considerably.

Price Free context, just shapes how to pack and plan
04 / A free lagoon, right on the waterfront

The Cairns Esplanade Lagoon

A free, lifeguard-patrolled artificial swimming lagoon right on the Cairns waterfront, a properly sensible solution given that the actual sea here isn't safe for casual swimming much of the year, marine stingers and crocodiles both being real considerations. It's a proper local institution, families and visitors alike using it as the default place to cool off.

The surrounding Esplanade parkland offers walking paths, playgrounds, and evening food stalls, a good, free way to spend a warm evening after a day out on the reef or in the rainforest.

Price Free
Hours Daily, roughly 6am–9pm
Address The Esplanade, Cairns
05 / A cable car through the canopy

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

A scenic cableway running above the rainforest canopy toward Kuranda, a properly different way to experience the Daintree region, gliding silently above the treetops with two stations along the way offering boardwalks down into the forest itself. The historic Kuranda Scenic Railway offers a complementary way back, a different perspective on the same landscape via a heritage train through the mountains.

Combining both, cableway up, railway down (or vice versa), makes for a proper full-day round trip covering the rainforest from two completely different vantage points.

Price Skyrail one-way around AUD 60; combined Skyrail and railway packages available
Hours Daily, roughly 9am–5pm
Official site skyrail.com.au
06 / Where the city actually shops and eats

Cairns Night Markets

A lively night market in the city centre, souvenirs, local crafts, and a properly good food court offering a wide range of Asian and Australian dishes, a good, casual way to spend an evening between more structured tour days.

It's aimed partly at tourists, but the food quality holds up well, worth a stop for dinner even if you're not planning to buy anything.

Price Free to browse; meals typically AUD 10–20
Hours Daily evenings, roughly 4.30pm–11pm
Address Central Cairns

Best time to visit Cairns

June through September, the dry season, gives the most consistently comfortable weather for reef trips and rainforest walks, lower humidity and less rain than the wet season.

The wet season (roughly November through April) also brings a higher risk of marine stingers along parts of the coast (hence the popularity of the Esplanade Lagoon), worth factoring in if ocean swimming outside organised reef trips is a priority.

Getting around Cairns

Central Cairns is walkable, and most reef and rainforest tours include hotel pickup, properly convenient given how spread out the surrounding attractions are. Rideshare and shuttle services cover anything not included in an organised tour; a rental car gives more flexibility for exploring the Daintree region independently.
