Things to Do in Riyadh
Prices, opening hours, best times to visit and the stuff nobody tells you, everything you need for a first trip to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, plus one pigeon's opinions on all of it.
Right, Riyadh. Cranes everywhere, this city's rebuilding itself in real time, a capital sitting in the middle of the Arabian Peninsula, unusually far from the coast, built around a mud-brick fortress complex that marks the birthplace of the modern Saudi state, and currently undergoing one of the most ambitious urban transformations anywhere in the world. This is the proper, no-nonsense guide to things to do in Riyadh: what things actually cost, when to go, what to skip, and which bits are worth the walk. Three main stops below, plus a quiz elsewhere on this site to see if you were paying attention.
At-Turaif District (Diriyah)
A historic mud-brick fortress complex in Riyadh marks the birthplace of the modern Saudi state, At-Turaif District in Diriyah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the original home of the Saudi royal family before the capital shifted to modern Riyadh, worth a proper visit to understand the country's founding history.
The site has been carefully restored in recent years, part of the wider Diriyah Gate development project, worth visiting both for the historical significance and to see how this restoration has transformed the area into a walkable, well-presented cultural district.

Masmak Fortress
A mud-brick fortress in central Riyadh, Masmak Fortress, was the site of a pivotal 1902 battle that helped establish the modern Saudi state, worth a visit for the museum inside, covering this founding history and the country's development since, a compact, easily manageable stop compared to the larger Diriyah site.
It's worth combining with a walk through the surrounding old Riyadh area, souks and older buildings giving a sense of the city before its recent rapid modern expansion.

Riyadh's Rapid Modern Transformation
Riyadh is undergoing major transformation as part of a plan to diversify the economy away from oil, an ambitious, fast-moving development programme, new cultural districts, entertainment venues, and infrastructure projects are being built at a pace that's difficult to overstate.
The Kingdom Centre Tower, with its distinctive inverted-arch design and Sky Bridge observation deck, offers a good vantage point to see this transformation directly, sweeping views over both the modern developments and the older parts of the city below.

Best time to visit Riyadh
November through March gives the only comfortable window for outdoor sightseeing, mild temperatures well suited to walking Diriyah and the old city.
Summer (roughly May through September) brings extreme heat, outdoor activity becomes largely impractical, lean on indoor attractions like the Kingdom Centre Tower if travelling then.
Getting around Riyadh
Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the practical way to get around Riyadh given the city's spread-out, car-oriented layout, a metro system has also opened in recent years covering key routes.
